Default Beane's of Boston: Nine-minute segment surfaces on the web

A Chicago-based classic TV site has posted on its FB page the first 9 minutes (including 2 commercials) of the American version of AYBS? Beane's of Boston. Only one episode was ever made, a pilot, and according to the FB post not even the Library of Congress has a copy of this show in its archives. The available footage repeats several AYBS? gags, which of course would be novel to the 1979 American audience. Mr. Beane is Young Mr. Grace, of course, but Mr. Rumbold is replaced by a young man who is Mr. Beane's nephew. The nephew was portrayed by a little-known actor, who IMHO did a terrible job. I don't know if this show would have ever made it if it had proceeded beyond the pilot stage. It is an interesting curio, however. The video can be seen at https://www.facebook.com/FuzzyMemori...3651185005336/.

What a great find! On my last visit to Chicago, I checked the holdings of the Museum of Broadcast Communications (where about fifteen years ago, I was one of the three finalists for the job of chief archivist) to see if they had it, but no luck.

From the looks of the clip, it's from an ancient off-air recording.

Thank you for posting that MissMac. I enjoyed watching it. John Hiller as Mr Peacock was not bad. Charlotte Rae was good also. The Miss Brahms character was a little too ditzy for me.

How cool to be able to see this!!

I definitely liked the set. I thought it was even better than the original AYBS set. Charlotte Rae made a decent Mrs. Slocombe. I didn't mind the young nephew replacing Mr. Rumbold, though it's not clear how much he would have done with the character. The actor playing Mr. Humphries kind of ruined the character, IMO. He was too flamboyant and cliche that screamed 1970s stereotype. John Inman played a more subtle though obviously gay man in a way that made his character lovable. This guy was just annoying.

And I loved the Kentucky Fried Chicken commercial..."yeah, we're eating out, but we're eating right." HA!

Thank you, missmacinthorpe!

Adding a new post because I can't edit my above one.

But I just wonder how different the TV landscape would have been if this was picked up, became a huge hit, and ran for years. Charlotte Rae wouldn't have been on Facts of Life. Tom Poston wouldn't have been on Newhart. John Hillerman wouldn't have been on Magnum P.I.

I remember being told that Hillerman played Peacock when I first found out about it and that surprised me the most. But seeing him here, he did decently based on that clip. He's got the tone of voice down pat.

I'm not big on that theme song though.

Wow, what a great find! I really enjoyed that, more than I expected to. I liked Mr Beane and the sales chart. Would definitely watch more if anyone ever found it!

Glad I finally saw it; like I expected, it was pretty mediocre. Charlotte Rae and John Hillerman were perfect casting. Tom Poston as Mr. Beane-Grace? A waste of Poston, who I think could have been awesome as the Rumbold figure. Everyone else was very generic. I wish they had cast Charles Nelson Reilly as Humphries; I think he would have gotten it right. Tony Randall would've been terrific, too, but he probably wouldn't have taken a minor role like Humphries had in that pilot.

I liked it to be honest. I think if given a chance this could have been something. All actors have to get their groove on for an ensemble piece and this is no different. As far as the joke repeats ... remember that back in '79 no one in the states would have heard the jokes like we have.
This one 9 minute segment was a hell of a lot better than that Australian disaster anyday.

I agree, Red, except about the set which I couldn't see much difference in. It was acceptable.

Mr Humphries made me cringe and Mr Grainger was terrible. I don't think Charlotte Rae's Mrs Slocombe would have had the range of Mollie's as time went on. Miss Brahms and Mr Lucas - meh. In fact Mr Beane's new secretary stood out as a more interesting character than Miss Brahms - it was like they'd taken all the guts out of Shirley and just left the ditz.

Mr Beane was okay but they gave him good lines to work with. It's not really fair to compare him to YMG because Harold Bennett was too frail to handle a big scene like that. As for the nephew, I've always thought they should have brought in a young relative to replace YMG, instead of OMG. In Beane's they probably would have tried Franklin in charge as a story line eventually.

I probably would have watched it and liked it had I never seen the original.

Hmmmm. Interesting thought. I wonder if I would have liked Beanes had I never seen AYBS. With the limited preview we've had, I can't tell. But it's a good question. I wonder: had Beanes aired for a few seasons and I watched it what I would have thought of AYBS when I saw it years later?

I wish the entire episode had been posted; I guess we'll never know what the big announcement from the nephew would have been.

Wow, this is amazing. My only real complaint is the guy playing Lucas. Other than that I think it could have been great. Nowhere near the AYBS? we all know and love, but still pretty neat. What a great find!

Definitely better than Australia's remake. I agree the character of Lucas was not a good one. John Travolta would have been better
