Default That's My Boy -Mollie Sugden

Ran from 1981-1986

Starring Mollie as Mrs Willis, a stern housekeeper for a Doctor and his wife, a part-time model. The plot twist is the doctor ends up being the baby Mrs Willis gave up for adoption decades before.

I've only seen the first episode, didn't like the way Mrs Willis comes off, a mean know-it-all. There wasn't a sense of fun that Mollie brought to the Mrs Slocombe character. I have only the first series at this point, I'll watch a few more to see if anything develops.

I do like the wife character, reminds me of a young Mary Tyler Moore, kind of scatterbrained but with a good heart. The doctor doesn't come off as very likeable either.

Anyone else familiar with this one?

I watched a few minutes of That's My Boy from Nebraska Public Television before 1999 with my Dad's Sattelite Reciever . They went digital right after that and the reciever was Analog.
I already knew Mollie had given up the Doctor as a baby. The bit I saw was Mollie mooning over her son.

I love the show. Mollie was so good in the show. I really can believe she is the guy's mother.

BTW Sir Richard Ryan - the wife on the show is the customer in "No Sale" who is offended by Miss Brahm's impersonation of a polo player's wife and says, "If that's the kind of person who likes them (bra), I certainly don't"

For those who watch this show - Greg and Sir Ryan or others???

What is your favorite episode?

Mine is "What seems to be the trouble" Where Ida helps at a home confinement

I'd have to agree with you there, BG. The home confinement episode is my favourite of the ones I've seen so far.

The one where both mom's are in the bar getting drunk and crying on each others shoulders.
Watched the show through once or twice but this is one eppy that stands out for me.

I didn't think this was available on DVD here in Australia; but a couple of days ago my husband found a store selling copies of the first two series, so once I can afford it, I'm going to buy them. Hope they're going to release the other three.

I've just watched the first two seasons, all that's available here in Australia.

I like it a lot. It's different to AYBS? in that Mollie carries the show, and certainly works hard at it. She brings in a lot of the cute and loveable expressions and voices she does on AYBS? but is also a distinctly different character to Mrs Slocombe.

AYBS? will always be my favourite of hers, though, partly because I grew up watching it so it has a comfort element to it but also because it's set in a shop and one of my childhood dreams was to work in a local store that was very similar to Grace Brothers. I still regret that I never had the chance...

I thought I'd hate Jennifer Lonsdale but the writing is such that they made her character sympathertic very early on, when she first takes sides with Ida. I also appreciate the frank and direct way the adoption issue is dealt with, and all the subsequent "illegitimate" offspring of Maureen's.

Default That's My Boy

I just started watching a TV show on YouTube and I was happy to discover the star of the show is Mollie Sugden. It's called That's My Boy. Here's a summary I found on the internet:

That's My Boy was a comedy series which aired on the ITV network in the United Kingdom. It starred Mollie Sugden as Ida Willis who starting working as a housekeeper for Robert Price and his wife Angie. Ida soon discovered that Robert was the son she gave up for adoption when he was born.

I've really enjoyed watching this on youtube so far. The theme song is irritating (not as bad as Take a Letter Mr Jones) and I would love to punch Robert (Shane) in the face for being such a dick to his real mum. The rest of it is great! Mollie looked like she was having such a wonderful time making it.

Ida isn't the nicest person in the world to start off with.

The relationship between Ida and Robert (Shane) grows into a delightful, loving mother and son. I love the show almost as much as AYBS?

As an adoptive parent, I can assure you Mollie's character was NOT the real Mum....
