It is considered impolite to refer to one's elders and betters by pronouns (she), or at least it used to be. You should refer to people by their name.

A male cat is a 'tom' cat, and the female is a 'she' cat so the chastisement became "She is the cat's mother!"

In other words "Who do you think you're talking to or about, Mr. Harmon? That's Miss Brahms to you"

I don't remember which episode that was, but doesn't that mean "fooling around"? Like "fiddling around"?

that episode was "Roots" when they wanted to get Old Mr. Grace a cheap present for his birthday and mr. rumbold came up with the idea of giving him a plaque of his family's roots and using it as for display in the window of the store.

I always thought that "on the fiddle" meant that Rumbold was using his managerial powers to get goods on the cheap when no one else was around to snap the item, like his golf clubs....

I also thought it meant cheating. Or stealing.

Came upon this site when I was looking up the definition of stringvestite. Never did find out what it meant. When Mr. Humphries says that he met, among others, a trendy bishop, a stringvestite, and a dustman with a very interesting tale to tell, returning from a party - what does he mean by stringvestite?

According to the "Urban Dictionary" I found online. A stringvestite is a transvestite that needs to make more of an effort to pass as a woman. For example shave his 5 o'clock shadow when wearing a dress and make-up. I don't know if that definition was popular in the 70's or not? I'd never heard of it before even though I was alive and well in the 70's.

Nice, BG...I never knew that one either! Miss Brahms mentions not wearing "string knickers" in Cold Comfort....I sort of assumed they were related.

What are string knickers??

On the fiddle is like being sneaky, untrustworthy.
