Now that I understand what they were implying, I can finally laugh at this joke.

I think Fannie Craddock is the British equivalent of Betty Crocker.

In "Oh What a Tangled Web." when Mrs. Peacock was interviewing Mrs. Slocombe, Mrs. Slocombe said "You know what us Northerners are?" I heard similar comments on other shows. What is so distintive about Northerners that people would recognize?

lol. Here, Sir!

If you google "characteristics of northerners uk" you'll get heaps of articles about it. They all say different things, which is why I haven't even attempted to summarise.

What I DO know is that the north/south divide has always been a thing, just as it is in the US. In both countries it stems from when people didn't or couldn't travel, and were suspicious of or even hostile to anyone from very far away. Or even a couple of villages away, in England's case. And in the US there was the Civil War...

When Mrs Slocombe says it I believe she's just tossing it off as a jokey answer because the interview has started to get a bit odd at that point and she's not sure what to say.

I think it's a saying that has meaning in each specific context. Taking a US example, if someone was accused of being flirtatious, they might say, "Well, you know what us southerners are like!" The same answer could be given if they were accused of being rebellious, or feisty. It's based on the characteristics a region's population is commonly (and stereotypically) believed to have. I'm from a different hemisphere and even I have ideas of "Americans", "southerners" and "northerners". And don't get me started on "the whinging poms". lol.

Now I'm exhausted. End of dissertation.

I found the info I needed. It said that Northerners are "loud, sociable, and not afraid to say what is on their minds". Mrs. Slocombe to a T.
