Default How To: Managing Subscriptions

The forum allows you to track updates to threads you have posted in, as well as in threads that you haven't posted in but are still interested in. This is called "Subscriptions".

Since October 2006, subscriptions have been opt-in: the default setting when you register is Do Not Subscribe to threads. If you registered before October 2006, your setting might be something else.

To see what your Subscription settings is, go to your User CP >> Edit Options.

Scroll down to the "Messaging and Notifications" box. There, you will see "Default Thread Subscription Mode". That's where you can change your setting. The options are:
  • Do Not Subscribe: default--you will not subscribe to threads you start or post in
Everything past this point means you will subscribe to threads you start/post in: you will be able to see it in your User CP. Now, it's just a matter of e-mail:
  • No e-mail notification: you won't receive an additional e-mail notice about updates
  • Instant e-mail notification: you will receive e-mail notices about updates fairly immediately (within a couple of hours). In order to prevent you from being spammed with messages, you will receive the notice one a new post is made, but you won't receive any more notices by PM until you visit the forum. So if there have been 21 replies since yours, you will only recive one notice (for the first reply), not 21. After you visit the forum, that will reset. If that doesn't make sense, PM me and I'll try explaining it again.
  • Daily e-mail notification: you will receive a daily digest of the day's updates
  • Weekly e-mail notification: you will receive a weekly digest of all the updates
You can change settings at any time, so experiment and choose what's right for you.

Overriding Your Settings:
You can override your global subscription choice for specific threads (say you want to pay more (or less) attention to it than your others); you can also choose to subscribe to threads that you have not posted in.

When viewing a thread, at the top of the thread page is "Thread Tools". Click on that and Select "Subscribe to This Thread". Click on that and pick your settings, then click "Add Subscription". You can also use this to unsubscribe from threads too.

Editing Subscriptions:
Changing your settings works from the time of change forward: it doesn't go back and update all of your subscriptions to the new settings (for example, if you switched from immediate to daily notifications, only new subscriptions after the change will be daily--the old ones will remain immediate). Also, once you subscribe to a thread, you stay subscribed until you delete the subscription or the thread is deleted. So this is where Editing Subscriptions comes in.

To view your subscriptions and edit them, go to List Subscriptions. There you can change or delete your subscriptions.

You can subscribe, unsubscribe and resubscribe to threads at any time. So again, set it to what works for you!
