To a point, I think she would sell anything, but she wasn't happy with Mr Rumbolds choice of merchandise in German Week either.

She wasn't happy with the German stuff because she thought she couldn't sell it.

The Naughty Knickers were another personal choice. She knew she could sell them but felt it was beneath her dignity.

In "Goodbye Mrs. Slocombe" when Humphries/Blanche is telling Rumbold that he'll never see her face in that store again, Blanche storms off with her dress up in the back and her ass showing. I know this was done for comedic effect but I always thought this was stupid as it would show that this is the type of customer that you wouldn't ever want back in the shop again.

Yep. Just a comedic effect, and I didn't find it all that funny.

She also wasn't too crazy about the Flexi-bra.

Oh, I HATE that bit! I understand that Humphries is supposed to be so flustered that he breaks out of character, but why would ANYONE hitch themselves up at the back when bolting up the stairs? Would a man grab his coat tails like that?

NO NO NO. It's just stupid, cheap and vulgar.

That's interesting, Lady S.

It makes me wonder how old a thing has to be before it escapes the PC strictures. I mean, "Pride and Prejudice" wasn't exactly about women's liberation, was it?

Why can't we just grasp that that's how things were? Comedy of the 70s was exactly like AYBS?, and real life in the 70s was pretty much like that too. Sexy secretaries did do better in the workplace than plain ones, for example, and what everyone thinks about Mrs Slocombe would have been thought at the time.

Why can't they just have a disclaimer in the theatre program, along the lines of, "Oh, what a different world it was..."

More pinched assed liberals ruining things ...
Would someone tell me what would be funny about a "PC World" ? You couldn't crack jokes about anything because someone would be bound to get butt hurt about it.

This world just makes me want to vomit anymore.

I'm not saying that secretaries should have to sit on the boss's knee anymore. That was a vile abuse of power and still exists in more subtle forms.

But comedy isn't like life. It's structured. Things can be equalised as they never are in life. What I mean is that in comedy Captain Peacock might pat Miss Brahms' bottom, but when she wants something she doesn't hesitate to hike up her skirt and adjust her suspenders. The guys might all stare at her boobs, but only she knows how much cotton wool is in there.

PC has its place but as with everything it can go too far. The real zealots seem to want to erase the past, censor it all, pretend it never happened. And that's dangerous for the future, as well as sucking the fun out of many things.

P.C. and AYBS don't go together.
