Rowling: Two 'Potter' Characters Will Die
Monday, June 26, 2006 10:05 PM EDT
The Associated Press
LONDON (AP) — Author J.K. Rowling said two characters will die in the last installment of her boy wizard series, and she hinted Harry Potter might not survive either.
"I have never been tempted to kill him off before the final because I've always planned seven books, and I want to finish on seven books," Rowling said Monday on TV here.
"I can completely understand, however, the mentality of an author who thinks, `Well, I'm gonna kill them off because that means there can be no non-author-written sequels. So it will end with me, and after I'm dead and gone they won't be able to bring back the character'."
Rowling declined to commit herself about Harry, saying she doesn't want to receive hate mail.
"The last book is not finished. But I'm well into it now. I wrote the final chapter in something like 1990, so I've known exactly how the series is going to end," she said.
Some characters might die, but the blockbuster movie franchise lives on. Warner Bros. Pictures has announced that the fifth installment will be released in U.S. theaters, including Imax screens, on July 13, 2007.
In "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix," directed by David Yates, the teenage Harry continues to battle the evil Lord Voldemort (again played by Ralph Fiennes) and his followers. Daniel Radcliffe is returning as the title character, and Emma Watson and Rupert Grint reprise their roles as Hermione and Ron. Oscar-nominated actress Imelda Staunton plays the malicious, frumpy Professor Dolores Umbridge, who tortures Harry.
In her Monday interview on the "Richard and Judy" show, Rowling said people are sometimes shocked to hear that she wrote the end of book seven before she had a publisher for the first book in the series.
"The final chapter is hidden away, although it's now changed very slightly. One character got a reprieve. But I have to say two die that I didn't intend to die," she said. "A price has to be paid. We are dealing with pure evil here. They don't target extras do they? They go for the main characters. Well, I do."
Rowling is the richest woman in Britain — wealthier than even the queen — with a fortune estimated by Forbes magazine last year at more than $1 billion.
Whatever she writes next, Rowling is sure of one thing: It won't be as successful as Harry Potter.
"I don't think I'm ever going to have anything like Harry again. You just get one like Harry."

i think j.k is planning to kill characters so central that no one will be able to pick up where she left off. she wants the series to end with her so no one else will be able to jump on the wagon after she writes her last chapter. smart move, because this way she protects her work, but said, i can't imagine anymore characters dying

This was the conversation a friend and I were having on the subject. My friend thought it was a publicity stunt and I said that she would kill off the characters to keep someone else from taking over the writing.

Especially how Draco is getting taller than his father now :)
I guess he wouldn't have to put up with the stuff in book 6 if he didn't want to now ;)

While you don't HAVE to read the other books to enjoy the most recent one, it helps immensely because it explains a lot of the backstory.

That author is now one of the richest women in the entire world. She's cryin' all the way to the bank. ;) She really got kids into reading though. So although I can't get into the "Potter" thing, I know it's really made many children excited for more stories and other books. The print run on the latest book is the largest in the history of publishing. Total sales is above 325 million copies. At about $30 a copy....well....HELLO! She's not got a thing to worry about for the rest of her life.

I am a Potter convert, I was so against the first story after fanatics at my church denounced them. I read it to form my own opinion and found the book to be merely good vs evil, and a darn good read. So Potter fans, enjoy the final installment and the 5th film. I don't expect everyone to be a fan, nobody should push their beliefs or fandom on anyone.

Technically I should not be a fan of the Harry Potter series, as the Catholic Church frowns upon witchcraft, even fictionalized.
IMO the Catholic Church needs to lighten up a little, because if they think these books are going to cause a lasting and widespread belief in the occult, they're nuts :D But to each their own beliefs.

I don't think one can limit the disdain for the Potter books to just the Catholic Church. There are religious groups who think the TV show "Bewitched" is evil. :shakehead: Meanwhile the bible is filled with horrifying tales of mass murder, infanticide, misogyny and pestilence. :?

Amazon was kind enough to send me an email telling me that I could pay MORE for shipping (mind you, I pre-ordered a couple of months ago) in order to guarantee that I receive it on the first day. Needless to say, i'm a bit peturbed, after all, shoudn't it be first, come, first serve. :(
I guess that the customer is not in any way "always right". :anger:

I went to the midnight book release at our local mall and we had a blast meeting and greeting. Some of our group ended up on the local news as we were in costume. There was a bagpiper dressed as a "Weird Sister" who played at the stroke of 12. Got the book at 12:15 and finished it at about 10 to midnight Sunday. It was one of the most exciting reads!
I enjoyed it thoroughly! If you'd like to discuss it, PM me.
