You can almost see where they realized, "Hey, that was a good bit! Let's expand on it."

Captain Peacock's "pirate" outfit to get his pay packet, and later his drag outfit.

When Mr. Harmon had an odds board going on each member of the staff, and later, Gambling Fever.

The Bliss Girl and the His & Hers episodes.

One joke that got recycled in AYBSa (GaF):

In one episode of AYBS Mike Berry (mr. Spooner) makes a crack about
Mrs. Slocombe's cat getting a moggydon(spelling????)

then in the first episode of AYBSa, Ms. Brahams makes the same crack
because Mrs. Slocombe has tranquilized her cat in order to make the trip to millstone manor.

Does that count?

In a couple of episodes Mrs. Solcombe tries on clothing for different reasons. Each time she remarks that it makes her look and feel younger, and each time Cpt. Peacock replies "A remarkable garment indeed."

In one epi, when Mrs Slocombe releases the clockwork mouse, and it scares Mr. Humphries.... while in Anything You Can Do, he is suddenly frightened, and when asked if he saw a mouse, he says men aren't scared by mice, it was the frog.

Captain Peacock,Mr Lucas, Mr Humpries, Mrs Slocombe, Mr Harman all show up in ill fitting clothes from time to time. In Takeover Lucas' dickie kept popping up. In By Appointment Mr Harman dons the traditional Grace Brothers Lift Uniform only to find out the Lift operators were traditionally shorter than him. In German Week Mr Humphries shorts were so tight his eyes were watering. In Camping In Mr Lucas got the pajamas from the window display with one leg gone. I'll bet you can think of many more.

The fact that Mrs. Slocombe was in "charge" of the ladies (refering to a lesbian thing) was done twice.

I'm not sure that's a reference to lesbianism - maybe you can explain it to me - if it's too personal maybe via private message.

I think it's just a reference to her being in charge of "ladies' intimate apparel". If there's a double entendre there I've missed it.

If Britain in the 70s preferred to joke about homosexuality by implication than openly, it was even more reluctant to joke about lesbianism. I can't actually think of any show of this era that joked about lesbianism...

Greg WibblyWobbly
12-16-2006, 06:29 AM
That's the way it always translated to me.

His and Hers

(after talking to Miss French about how the gym slip got the Men going)
Peacock - "Your stockings also seemed to upset the Head of the Ladies"
Miss French - "Yes, well I supposed that job would attrach an odd sort of person."

Memories Are Made Of This

Mr. Walpole - "Tell me Mrs. Slocombe, where do you work ?"
Slocombe - "Oh, I'm in charge of the Ladies."
Mr. Walpole - "So that's why we haven't met."

Jeff Humphries

Actually having that explained, the jokes now make sense. Thanks for sorting that out Wib !

Tiddles
12-16-2006, 09:48 AM
Nope...nope....no so fast, there! ;)

Dean was partially correct and I'll take it further: Actually....being in charge of the ladies has nothing to do with a lesbian reference. In the UK "The Ladies'" is a polite term for "the ladies restroom." There is often an attendent in upscale department store bathrooms...someone to hand you a towel after handwashing etc.. So the pun "being in charge of the ladies" means both ladies COUNTER...and then the rather low-brow job of being a women's washroom attendent. If Mrs. Slocombe is working in in the women's bathroom all day, (in charge of "The Ladies'") then it's unlikely for a male employee to have seem her before meeting on the floor of the ladies and gents dept. It's got nothing whatever to do with lesbianism but everything to do with job, status in the job, and "class". The His and Hers salesgirl would consider HER job to be ABOVE Slocombe's.

Edited to add that there was only one slight reference to lesbian flirting in AYBS? that I can recall. When Cynthia Randall mistook Mrs. Slocombe's sales pitch for a come-on and RAN from the store in "fear" of what was to happen next! All other homosexual references are more "open" and unabashed and refer to men, of course. It was just the times....

Dean
12-16-2006, 12:42 PM
yes I think both actually are references to being in charge of the ladies' restroom. As Tiddles said, at the time having a woman in charge of the rest room area - at many you had to pay to go in - was reasonably common.

Well explained Tiddles :)

Greg WibblyWobbly

That's sucks... I think it's funnier with a lesbian reference....

It could also be that lesbians were usually the ones who held jobs as restroom attendants in the UK during that time. I have no facts to back that up, though..but it's possible now that I think about it. AYBS? was such a show of stereotyping people.
