Greetings!
Mr Humphries utters an exclamation in the episode where Mr Lucas sells the checked suit that belonged to Mr Humphries' customer who was trying on a dress for a fancy dress do. I cannot understand understand what Mr Humphries says once he discovers the mishap. The exclamation sounds a bit like, "Oh, our ada!" Please tell me what what was said while I wait for my deaf aid to arrive in the meantime.
All the best,
TF

This was a favorite question of mine on the Old Board. I love it when he says it and I've heard him say it in two different eppys. One in "Up Captain Peacock" and the other one eludes me at this time (come on folks, it's 5:30 in the AM !!!)
Have yet to find out what it means though.

'Our ada' meaning like - 'Oh no'/'Oh my God'/'Oh dear me', Mr Lucas has sold the suit.
It's just an old saying

That's it...it's just an exclamation of frustration "Heavens to Betsy!" that type of thing. Somewhere on the old board, someone got into the origin a bit better but I think that post was lost. I'll look and see if I can locate it.

Greetings, Everyone!
I appreciate all your prompt replies. I am glad to know that my ears have not failed me, and I can keep the deaf aid turn off for a bit longer. Tiddles, did you happen to find the old post that discusses the origin of "our ada"? I tired to find a bit of information about the expression, but I have yet to find any information--including any information its usage--by way of the major search engines. Perhaps the information could be added the Wikipedia and the Are You Being Served? FAQ?
Thanks so much for your help.
Sincerely,
TP

No...sorry....but it was discussed on Our Old Board. And the basic idea of "Our Ada" is a term of frustration. Have you "Googled" this? There's a magic combo of search words that brings up the explaination. Keep a-googlin'!!!

There is a thread "An Evening with John Inman" (If I remember correctly, that's what its called...Greg will know for sure!!!) which links to audio of
JI talking about AYBS....of particular import to this thread, he is asked
a question from the audience about "our Ada"...
As I recall, JI did not remember the actual line but supposed it was
as has been chronicled in this thread....an expression with contextual
meaning of frustration or surprise.

Click on this and it will take you to the Multimedia page of the board where the link to the interview is. I can't remember what part (Either 1, 2 or 3) but the "Our Ada" is in there.
