Why wasn't Mr. Lucas or Mr. Spooner not in Are you Being Served? Again (in Holland we called this show Grace and Favour by the way)

I actually prefer GAF myself Ronald. The name "Are You Being Served? Again" was used here in the states so people would know it was a continuation of the staff's story. Us Yanks need things spelled out for us...
I don't really think there was an explanation on why Dick or Bert wasn't there. I know when Trevor (Lucas) was interviewed, he thought the whole story of Humphries with a woman was ridiculous.
I'll see if I can drum up some more info on that or maybe one of the "Servers" may know.

I think Trevor would spent the bed himself with young Mavis Maulterd....

There could have been some fantastic stories there with Lucas trying to vie Mavis's attention from Humphries !!!

I don't know why the two juniors never signed on...perhaps they both were committed to other projects?

I've googled on the Internet and found something: Trevor Bannister refused to play in this show, because he found it ridicilious that Mr. Humphries would have to sleep with a women and he thought that to set some caracters in a different place would work out.
I thouhght Bannister had a point there, because some of the episodes where lovely, I didn't had the quality of the orginal show and I've missed the caracters of Mr. Grainger and Young Mr. Grace of course.

Thanks for jarring my memory Ronald. That's what Trevor said in the interview. That the placement of Humphries with a woman and the different location were why he didn't want to do it.

That's interesting, as I didn't even know that Trevor Bannister had been approached to star in Grace and Favour. If he had been in the show it would have been better, as his interplay with John Inman and Mollie Sugden would no doubt have added to the show.
I never really decided whether Mr Humphries sleeping with a woman worked in the show or not.

Mr. Lucas would have been good to protect our Mr. Humphries from the bully Malcolm. On the other hand, maybe they should have had Mr. Mash to help Mr. Maulterd muck out the barn....as for Mr. Spooner well it would have been a bit lame for Miss Brahms to be calling a 40 year old guy, "you stupid stupid boy!"

True about Mr. Lucas's feelings on the show but he was working doing stage work and Mr. Spooner really did have his own band so there was no getting them for the new show. Don't know if they approached Mr. Spooner. Mr. Rumbold looked pretty much the same tho.

True for Trevor. I have to admit I liked him better. Even tho Mike Barry tried his best Trevor was sort of ingrained in the show like Arthur Borough(?) Mr. Grainer. They never could find a good replacement for him.

Mr. Humphries and Mavis were perfect!!!! " True Love"
I've just rewatched the whole two seasons and they were such a hoot to see again. Mr. Humphries and Mavis were a joy to watch in their budding relationship. Mr. Humphries was just such a sweetie in the one episode with the cricket match and Mavis asks Mr. Humphries if she could give him a kiss and he reluctantly acquieses and she gives him a long kiss on his cheek and he's standing there with his face screwed up like he's in pain then when it is over he realizes that it was quite nice. They were perfect together. Mr. Lucas would have been totally different with Mavis and I'm sure Mavis would have played it differently to Mr. Lucas. I'm not sure how Mr. Spooner would have been with Mavis.:sleepingsmiley:

I can just imagine if Mr. Lucas were on the set. Some of Mrs. Slocombe's lines being given to Mr. Lucas would have been classic.
Mavis: "Mr. Humphries, how is your back after all that ining and outing we were doing?"
Mr. Lucas: (Giving that classic shocked look of his) "Blimey, what have you been up to?"
Mr. Humphries: "It was all perfectly innocent. We were in the woodshed, lighting a fire together."
Mr. Lucas: "Oh, yeah? Well if I'm any judge of character, it wouldn't take much of a spark to get her to burst into flames."

Well according to what I have read David Croft had every intention of bringing back AYBS? but that they had done as much as they could do with episodes in the store. Jeremy Lloyd even states that he felt they may have gone a couple seasons too many in the original series. Now as far as the Mr. Humphries/Mavis interplay I thought it was interesting. You see Mr. Humphries always stated that he was neither one way nor the other but you hear of him in a club called the daffodil club and other strange things so it makes you wonder. Seeing Mr. Humphries with Mavis kind of made me cheer a bit like when watching Star Trek and you see one of the other main guy characters get the girl instead of Captain Kirk always getting her. Mind you the interplay between Mr. Lucas and Mavis would have been sparkly as I think she would have put him in his place big time and Mr. Spooner too probably LOL!

Funny you should mention that because I've seen GAF over here on our PBS stations and they've always showed it as GAF when the episode comes on but they list it in the programme guide as AYBS? Again.

See where Mr. Lucas would have been all crass with the jokes and all over Mavis, Mr. Humphries just wasn't that way so it was nice I think to see a man not drooling all over the farmer's daughter.

Mr Lucas and Mr Spooner never seemed to be interested in settling down, just for a quick cuddle or a bit of slap and tickle. Now Mr H was honorable and even embarassed by Mavis' attentions. Had he really been interested I think it would have been less funny.
Re: AYBS?A! vs GAF- I think it was changed also due to the fact that the phrase GAF means the Laird allowing people to live on the land for free while they work it. Hence the term. In the US, has anyone heard of such a ridiculous notion? Live free??? Ho ho, that's rich, I'll say!

For me, it had to be Mr Lucas. I think that he worked better in a trio with of Mr Grainger and Mr Humphries, but then again, I really liked Mr Tebbs. I think that Mr Spooner just didn't quite fit and I found him a little bit forced as a character.

But I just thought of something. He would have been a junior for an awfully long time and that might not have worked out. Mr. Humphries should have at least been senior man and Mr. Lucas/Spooner the Middle Man. Mr. Grainger would not have made it to GAF. I agree that GAF didn't have the quality that the original series had had but for the 12 episodes that they did they were pretty darn good. Some eppys drug a bit but still had funny moments.

I would have liked the story to have been that Lucas left the store a while ago and wasn't in contact with the other staff members for years. Then when he pops up at the Maor, he successful and has money out the wattuz.

Hehe. I liked their relationship, but I could never see it being anything other than platonic. It would have been funnier with Mr. Lucas trying to get her attention.

OOOOOO! I got an idea! Lucas and Spooner came back...they could be the 'double entendre' pulling the birds. OOOO they could duke it out for Ms. Brahms and Mavis!! Or that snooty Miss Lovelock...blahhhhh. Or I could be the flirty American tourist and seduce Mr. Lucas!
I heard Trevor felt that Lucas would have been too old for that part...just kinda chasing the birds.. like some dirty old man

Lucas - "Well as long as it doesn't get as big as Mr.s Slocombe's waist size, you none the worse for wear."
Spooner - "Well I believe it should be up to Miss Brahms who's bird she is."
Miss Brahms - "I wished you two would shut your cake holes and let me get on with it."
Lucas -"Get on with what ?"
Miss Brahms - "I have to do the cleaning, we do have a manor to run you know."
Lucas - "Poor Shirley, reduced to this. Well I'm here now to take you away from all this bit of common."
Spooner - "What ??? You take her away ?? What kind of life can you offer her ?"
Lucas - "More than what you could. What do you have to offer her ? Been 20 years since that record contract went down the tubes."
Spooner - "Well that's why I'm really here. The record company got hold of me and told me that there a huge cult following for me and the time is right for me to get a hold of the members of "Left Bank" for a sort of reunion tour."

Lucas - "Well when we are talking about girls, that's all you're likely to get up."
(Spooner and Lucas laughing again)
Humphries - (starting to tear up) "If my Mother was here she'd tell you a .... muffled cries "
(Humphries runs out of the room)
Mavis - "That's it !!! Now look what you've done to poor Mr. Humphries !! He's more of a man than what you two are."
Spooner - "I guess that doesn't say too much about us." (pats Lucas on the chest, laughing)
Miss Brahms - "Er !!! What bout me ??"
Spooner - "What about you ??"
Miss Brahms - "Well you were fighting over me till Mavis walked in."
Lucas - "Well who would want day old bread when a fresh crumpet walks through the door?"

Hi everyone, this is my 1st post here....and I'm glad to have joined the forum.
Well, in the book "Are You Being Served?" by Adrian Rigelsford, Anthony Brown, and Geoff Tibballs, Trevor Bannister [aka Mr. Lucas] comments about why he wasn't in Grace and Favour.
Trevor says this, "Basically, Lucas was just a sexist with no respect for women at all. A character like that would not be acceptable today. That's why-even if I had been asked-I would not have been interested in doing Grace and Favour....I could never resurrect Lucas. He might have been OK as a bottom-pinching 30-year-old, but now, 20 years on, he'd just be seen as a dirty old man."

Yea, I could easily envision either one pretending to be a rich guest visiting the Manor, running the staff ragged to serve them. I can't really think of a good storyline that would have either as one of the beneficiaries like the rest of the staff. They wouldn't have stuck around.
Besides, with the additions of Miss Livelock, Mavis, and Morris Moulterd, there just wasn't enough room for more characters. In some ways, I wonder if it wouldn't have been better without Rumbold?

It would have been cool to have one of them do a guest appearence like cpl.er...capt. joe said, as a rich guest or something to that affect and haveing their revenge on them with over working them and stuff.
