Title: Eppy One
Season: 1
Eppy: 1
Year: 1992
Show Run: 1
************************************************** *********
This is the first of the "Grace and Favour" series. In this eppy, we see the staff, reunited after the store closes down and Mr. Grace passes away. Thinking they are going to cash in on their pension funds, they soon realize tht the only thing left to them after all their years of paying in is an old county manor.
Let us know what you think of this eppy !!!!!

It's fun to see the staff adjust to the countryside in the first episode. Especially, the reunion of Mrs Slocombe and Mr Moulterd. All of the new characters (Lovelock, the Moulterds) all make an excellent first appearance in this episode.
Very Young Mr Grace

I enjoyed the staff getting stuck in the lift at the very beginning of the show; it was a great way to send Grace Brothers off into the sunset.
The new surroundings fit the cast very well. It was hilarious to see them slowly realize they would have to muck in and run the place themselves as the series progressed, which they didn't quite think would happen in episode one. It's too bad they couldn't have cashed the place in and had $50,000 pounds each, but then there would not have been a series, huh?

I thought the writers did a good job with easing the cast into the story.
One question though... Where is the original picture of Young Mr. Grace at ???

This is an episode of firsts so I'll talk about things that happened first (the first time we get to see it) on this show.
I liked the theme song
I liked the way Miss Lovelock was introduced to the staff
and also Mavis and Maurice (or is it Morris?)
I think it somewhat fitting or at least typical that YMG died and left them to sort out their
own retirement situation.
And I like the manor house. but mostly I think I like how they re-introduce
Mrs. Slocombe to Maurice. (or whatever his name is)
I don't know if it was on purpose, but the first episode set up the story
quite nicely for the rest of the episodes...a good introduction.

I thought everything worked very well.
Must of been hard to do as they sort of had to reintroduce the characters to people who never saw AYBS? And that was handled well.
The theme tune works too and really sets the tone of the show, I always liked how the image faded from a water colour painting into live action.
The reason for them being there is a little far fetched but works well enough in the long run as really, who cares??!
I can't really fault it to be honest, bit of the old and bit of the new, its a very refreshing show.
Adding story arcs was a nice change too.
Location shooting was great and a wonderful change.
Made me want to tune in next week that's for sure!!

I made each one of them into a wallpaper.

Something to watch for when you view this first episode of "Grace and Favor." As the taxi drives up in front of Millstone Manor, just before it comes to a complete stop, look sharply up at the windows on the second floor...you'll see a curtain distinctly moving. It's as though someone has been holding the curtain up and, when they see the taxi arrive, they drop the curtain dramatically.
When I first noticed it, I guess I'd watched that episode quite a few times. You have to be quick to catch it, but it's definitely there.
Maybe it's Rumbold watching for the arrival of his old friends! :D

Very cool observation there Catherine !!!!
It's either Rumbold or that ghost that Mavis speaks about creeping around the halls....

Like the first eppy of AYBSA, they brought us back to the cast and got things started off with a bang. The difference between AYBS and AYBSA is that AYBS did'nt go particuarly in order whereas AYBSA had an episodical order to it.

AYBS? Again is almost like a comedy soap opera. I like how one ep often bounced off from the last one.

I wished they would have done that with AYBS?, to at least keep the characters name straight.

There is a reused joke in epi 1....when they alight from the taxis and are
talking about Mrs. Slocombe's pussy being very quiet, Miss Brahms says
that she (Mrs. SLocombe) gave her pussy a moggy-don (not sure it that's
how to spell it or not).
Mr. Spooner made a similar joke...punch line being moggy-don in AYBS.
Can't remember the epi title (greg?) but its in the canteen(I think).
This is different than the "pussy" and "I'm free" type carryover jokes because it only
occurred once in AYBS? and then pops up again in AYBSA(GaF).

Just in case someone wants clarification on that "moggy-don" line...
Mogadon is a prescription "downer" for anxiety, etc.
"Moggy" is Scottish and/or Cockney slang for "cat." Short for "mongeral."
"Moggie" is also slang for the drug "mogadon."
Class dismissed! :D

I like that, even after the passing of Young Mr. Grace, that the employees are still getting "Diddled". They never could get a break when working in the store, not they arn't getting what they thought they were entitled too for their pensions. So, they continue to have to work. I thought that the plots came together between the two series.
My favorite part of Episode 1 was when Mrs. Slocombe got her gin and tonic and passed the tonic over the gin without putting it in the glass. That cracks me up every time (and sets the stage up for the episode with her ex-husband down the line.

Still prefer AYBS? over GAF. I like GAF but I'm more into the store background then the manor.

I love that part too, and when Mr Humphries comes down the stairs and says something like 'I do love those big old baths, I was just pouring the water away when I got caught up in the vortex' and does his little head swishing
