View Full Version : Now Unread Posts will Remain Unread Until Read!!!

It used to be that when you left the forum, any post(s) that you didn't get to read before leaving would be marked as read the next time you visited the forum. That led to a lot of frustation among members who would wonder where the posts they hadn't read went.
Now, any post that you have not read will remain marked as Unread until you actually go and read the post. Click on "View Unread Posts" in the upper right corner and it will list all of the posts you haven't read.
In order to have this fix, "View Posts Since Your Last Visit" had to be taken off. And a technical note: if someone edits a post, the forum will automatically retag the edited post as being Unread.
In other news, the following features were restored with the upgrade and should be working normally:
* AIM Online/Offline
* Y! Online/Offline has been fixed
* Profile views count
* Show own topics
Added was a new feature in Polls that highlights the choice you voted for in Purple, and highlights the results in other colors depending on percentage of votes received.

Personally, I liked the old way better. Assuming I regularly (daily) attended the site, I could see just the posts that had been updated since I last was on. Now I have all the posts that I haven't read (and am not intending to read), displayed....but that's just IMO.

Well that explains things. If this ever comes up for a vote, I'd like to say I liked the old way better, too.

Dear Minki
I don't read all the posts very often.
I read about 50% of them.
This is why I have so many cluttering--up the un-read posts area.
I liked the Old Way BETTER...

There is that nifty little button in the main parts of the forum that says "Mark All Topics Read". That would solve most of your problems. :D

I had received a few complaints about messages going "missing" under the old system and I too found the old way a bit annoying, since every time I log on I can't always read every new message and then I have to try to hunt them down later on.
So I thought this might solve the problem. Oh well, I guess someone's problem is someone else's...non-problem (?) :)
I do not want the masses unhappy, and if most of you want to go back to the way things were, that's fine with me! I wish I could keep both ways, but unfortunately, with the way the forum software works we can't have both the "Keep as Unread" and "View Posts Since Last Visit" features at the same time...so I can have only one.
I'm leaving things as is for a few days because I won't have the free time needed to change it back until the weekend, and to give everyone a chance to try the new way out and weigh in with their opinions. If by Saturday night most of you want the change back to the old way, then that's what you shall get...but if you haven't spoken up yet, you need to let me know how you feel, either here or by PM.
Same thing if you do like the new system and want it to stay: you need to tell me that too! And if I don't hear anything from you on it...I'll take that as meaning you're neither one way nor the other :D

Too bad there's not a nifty little button for all my other problems :lol: :lol:
thx, Greg, it does fix most of the associated problems....but you have to
REMEMBER to do it, ooops..... :lol: :lol: :lol:
Minki....here's a crazy and probably too "worky" idea....make it a choice between the old and new way by user profile.... Never mind I see you already addressed that previously....sorry
