JOHN INMAN 'WEDS' LOVER

British comedian JOHN INMAN 'married' his long-term lover in a civil partnership ceremony in London on Friday (23DEC05).

The ARE YOU BEING SERVED? star 'wed' RON LYNCH in Westminster under a new British law giving official recognition to same sex relationships, which came into effect last week (ends23DEC05).

Inman said, "This means everything to me. It was very moving."

Well, I guess we now have an answer to Mr. Grace's question!

Good for John...it's good to see him well again and looking happy. I wonder though, what we're to make of this past article (http://www.jeddy.org/aybs/news/str8.txt)? Was he just toying with the public?

Welcome aboard....

I always felt John was gay, and I think we all did. So now he's out and doesn't need the beard anymore. Not to say he wasn't very close with the lady in question!

What a relief! Since John's website isn't functioning anymore, I'd imagined all sorts of things were wrong. This is wonderful news and I also wish John and Ron every happiness.

I wonder if there was a photographer present...

It was their wedding...so I presume there was. We probably will never see the photos, though, unless he writes his autobio.

Yes, that's his cousin. She plays Elizabeth.

I haven't seen anything of hers since her Fig Newton commercials a few years ago.

OT:

I think the Fig Newton commercial had her playing an "upper crusty" type who insists that Fig Newtons aren't cookies, they are cakes. That's how I vaguely remember it.

"May I have an other cookie, Mother?"

"They're not cookies! They're CAKES!"

Paul Newman has his own version of these yummy cookiecakes....he calls them Fig Newmans!

Follow me on this one because I haven't started to drink a day early. Looking at that picture of John's man Ron, I thought to myself... "Wib, who does he look like ???" Then for some odd reason, the song Chanson De Amour went through my head and it hit me. "That it !!!!!" I thought Ron is a dead ringer for "Left Bank's" lead male singer !!!!! Maybe John channeled Ron for the idea for the part ????

I thought Ron looked a bit like Tony Blair!

I also noticed that John seems to be much thinner than he was when he hosted "Tribute to Mollie Sugden." To me, he looks more like he did when he was performing in Are You Being Served Again.

Congratulations to John and Ron. It certainly is interesting that just six years ago, John felt he had to be deceptive about his true nature. I do feel that in the UK there has been a gradual change in attitudes to the point where this change to legalise civil unions was not espeially controversial. Anyway it's great news for John and he also looks fit in the picture too... excellent!

I suspect it's kind of similar to the case of Paul Lynde. You can be openly gay to a point, you just can't say outright, "I'm gay," or else you get blackballed. But in Lynde's case, it was the 60s and 70s. At this point, there's a lot more freedom for someone like John.

Paul Lynde was a great example. He'd be my first choice to star in my American Fantasy version of AYBS? As Mr. H. of course!

With John no longer "free," I was a bit surprised when I ran across this article from a 1999 interview in which John says he's been involved in a relationship for 28 years and that it's with a woman.

His "assistant" is referred to as "Ron."

http://www.jeddy.org/aybs/news/str8.txt

Since John's new legal partner is now Ron, I'm sure the entire article is less than credible, but I thought it would be an interesting piece to contemplate now that we do know a bit more about John's personal life.

We actually discussed that article a little bit earlier in a recent thread. I don't think the article would be at fault. John didn't feel like coming out at that time, so he refers to a female. It's not a lie, really. Many gay men hang out with women. He had no obligation to announce his sexuality to his fans. Most of us "knew" anyway.

One interesting aspect is that he in the 1999 article claims to have been with the woman for 28 years. He is now hitched to Ron who he says he has been with 33 years - six years on. Which almost adds up.

I wonder then if its fair to say that when he's talking about the woman in the 1999 piece, he is really describing his relationship with Ron. It's something that I know other gay celebrities have done - talk about their relationship as if their partner was a woman.

Anyway whatever the case, it's great news that he has found happiness.

33 years? If I do my maths correctly, that means they have been together since the start of AYBS in 72/74! So all that time for those 10 seasons they were together!

Congrats to John and Ron!

Yep, I figured as much. Maybe that's why the writers decided to make Humphries a bit "one way or another" towards the middle of the run. To keep people from talking about his personal life. Let's face it, in the first few Seasons there was no arugment on which side of the fence that Humphries sat on.

That's a good point - maybe they gave Humphries the shift for many reasons, including John's personal life.
