A question asked by someone by e-mail:
Which of Young Mister Grace's secretaries had a Birmingham accent, who was she played by and was the accent real?
I'm no good with accents and I don't know who this secretary would be...help!!! :)

I'm at a loss. I don't know accents either.

Odd question....but I'll pop in here with my 2 pence. Since all the players were Brits, we can assume the accent was "real" as any Brit should be able to do another British accent...much like we can mimic a Southern Accent.
Birthplaces of the actresses show none of them having been actually born in Birmingham proper. But I don't have a map handy. Cities like "Neath" and "Newbury" may be nearby. There are no birthplaces listed for Penny Irving or Moira Foot. This according to the Webber/Croft/Lloyd AYBS? book.

I think Birmingham, England was meant, not Birmingham, Alabama. (BTW, I've never heard an Alabama accent on the show, either!)

Maybe not an Alabama accent certainly but I seem to remember a fairly poor Texas accent from Mrs.Slocombes..uncle was it? I can only imagine how hard it was to do that, I bet he felt like he was dumbing down English.
And for the record he did great for a Brit. Heck I'm from New England and I don't sound like a human half of the time.

There's a Birmingham in England, too? (Sorry just my brand of humor)

I don't recall any with a Birmingham accent and that is a very distinctive accent! Quite comical actually sometimes.

If I had to take a guess, based on Tiddles' input, it probably is Isabella Rye since she was born in Newbury.

The only secretary I remember having a very distinctive accent was the one from "Oh What a Tangled Web", Miss Hazelwood. I thought she sounded more rural/Northern, but I'm American and can't say I'm much of an expert. All the other secretaries I can think of had standard-sounding British accents.
