Although this doesn't really have to do with the episode I think I might of figured out the staffs explanation for Mr Lucas going, due to this quote:

Mr Spooner: What happened the last time the figures where that low?

Captain Peacock: We fired the Junior

Could that be a hidden explanation for Mr Lucas?

Actually, there were other episode (even early on) that threatened Lucas
with dismissal because of low sales!
