I recently came across a book called "In Defense of British Cooking: 200 Recipes that Prove The English CAN Cook" and I recommend it. It's amusing to read, and a lot of the recipes are in the Easy to Do category so you don't need to be a master chef to try them.

The only complaint I have about it is that for some of the recipes, she doesn't tell you exactly how long to cook something: she'll say "cook until set" or "cook until pale brown". I made the Scotch Shortbread today (tip: though the recipie doesn't include it, you really do need to add about 1/4 c. milk (more or less) to get it to make a dough), and it told me to bake "until pale brown".

That was 50 minutes later :D

Mind you, the results were worth it...and if you add some almond extract to the dough, they're even better.
