I can't decide between Wilberforce and Cuthbert myself... :lol:

Bonus question: What funny/ off the wall name would *you* have named a particular character (The one that comes to mind is Mrs. Humphries...I would have expected her to have a weird name, considering what she named her son! I can't think of any names at the moment but i think it would be funny to hear some suggestions. :D ) Or, better yet...what would you have liked Young Mr. Grace's name to be? I don't remember ever hearing it, though it was funny in the episode where it was old Mr. Grace's birthday and he called his brother by his own name :)

When they think they are going to be sold to the Japanese and Mr. Rumbold
calls Mr. Harman, Harry. someone says, I didn't know your name was Harry.
Harman: its not, its beverly, but it the thought that counts.....Love that one.

The time WCH calls out to Mr. Rumbold, "goodnight Cuth!" That's pretty funny too.
So I guess for me its not the name so much as the name in the context.

:lol: That cracks me up every time.

"Not from where I'm standing...Betty Baby!"

And of course Mr. Lucas revealing his first name...for the second time...

:lucas01: ::::Dramatic Pause....."......DICK!"

I thought Percival was funny because I laugh when I hear the name Percy.
Also, Mr.Rumbold's brother (Mycroft?) was a bizarre one too!

Mycroft was pretty bizarre. A real nerdy-name. Suited him.

Yes, I agree Tiddles...Mr. Lucas revealing his name for the second time is my favorite name revelation moment. It gets me every time I watch it!! :lol:

Actually on the topic of Mr. Lucas' name... what episode was his name James in? I only remember the one where he said it was Dick but I know the DVD says it depends on the episode?

Also, did anyone else think it was too funny that in all the times Mrs. Slocombe thought she was in love (or lust) with Mr. Humphries, even when they were "engaged", they still called each other Mr. Humphries and Mrs. Slocombe. (The only 1 exception I can recall is when Mrs. S walks into Rumbold's office, and she asks "Where's my Clayborne?)
I can just see it, if they had gotten married *shudder*, :eek: and continued to call each other by their last names...there they are (well, there she is, anyway) trying to have a moment of...er, wedded bliss, and (assuming Mr. Humphries isn't so overcome by Mrs Slocombe that he faints again,) she calls out "Mr. Humphries" in the heat of...well...um.. the thought it too disturbing to continue, nevermind :oops:
it just strikes me as funny. :roll:
<--- As for that, I think the expression on Mr. Humphries' face says it all:D

The whole "Cuthbert" thing gives me the giggles. That name is one I'd kill my parents for giving me !!

I believe it is Mr. Mash that announces Mr. Lucas as James in "The Clock".
when Mr. Lucas and Mr. Humphies arrive for the ceremony.

The funniest one to me is;
"and to you Harry"
"I never knew you name was Harry"
"It ain't, it's Beverly. But, it's the thought that counts."

How come Mrs. Slocombe have a lot of names?

Because it was amusing for her to have a lot of names, and one name "Rachael" is mostly a Jewish name, so we can assume she's somehow part Jewish. Which is also "funny" on a non-PC show from the 70's. It's also very common for "upper class" Brits to have more than 2 Christian names. For example:

Charles Philip Arthur George (Prince of Wales)

Anne Elizabeth Alice Louise (Anne, The Princess Royal)

Wot's in a name? The most unusual name I ever heard was Onslow--KUA. BUt on AYBS, I like imagining first names for those we never learned
Like Alfred Grace, and Phoebe Bakewell. lol

That could be fun to do Diana.
I always imagined YMG as being a Percy, even though Mr Tebbs was already Percival.

This show was the first time I had ever heard Wilberforce. I have always thought that was so weird.. and right behind that is Cuthbert. But since hearing these names on this show, I have now heard them several several times elsewhere as well.

Definitely Mrs. Slocombe's name was the funniest. Who in the world names their child Abergivenny?! Not to mention all the rest of it...

As for young Mr. Grace, considering the hank-panky he got up to at his age, maybe his name was Amazing! ;-D
