I loved Masterpiece's "Downton Abby," one of the best shows I've watched in a long time. In fact, I bought the DVD of Series 1 after watching it on PBS, just so I can view the show as often as I like. Excellent casting and plot. Maggie Smith was marvelous, and so was Hugh Bonneville.
I am looking forward to the new series, coming this fall.

You and I are on the same wavelength...I was just thinking about starting a thread on this same subject!
I saw Downton Abbey on Netflix in the last few weeks. I was totally hooked, and finished the whole season in about one day. Really amazing stuff...it reminds me some of the best British lit out there (Austen, the Bronte sisters, etc). Strong characters, misunderstandings and miscommunications that lead to drama and romantic strife, scandal, exposing the strengths and weaknesses of having such a structured class system and a house full of servants...what's not to like? I loved Anna and Mr. Bates and Sybil, and I hate, HATE Thomas and O'Brien. Can't wait for season 2!

I read the title of this thread as "Downtown Abby," and thought she might be in the same line of work as YMG's paramour, Fifi LeFan. ;)
:humphries01: : " 'Ring third doorbell and go straight up'...[YMG snatches paper out of Humphries' hand] No wonder you couldn't get down those stairs!"

I thought I knew my British history, but I was very surprised to see that the newspaper was IRONED by the footman at Downton Abby before it was presented to the master of the house! What a hoot!
larsen...you're too funny!

I, too, love DA. I bought the DVDs from PBS.com as soon as they were available. I really like how it touches on so many subjects: American hieresses, class in Edwardian Britain, success, etc.
