I've often wondered this... who was running the counter while the department was at coffee or lunch? Did they just close the store?

I always assumed the whole store was closed for an hour or so, but I'm not sure.

This is likely what happened. In "Coffee Morning," Mr. Lucas asks if the staff can have an extra 5 minutes for lunch because Captain Peacock delayed the start of lunch by 5 minutes. Peacock's response was that the customers will be coming in at two o'clock and need attended to.

Seems like sometimes the staff all went to coffee/tea at the same time and sometimes they had scheduled breaks according to rank. (In The Junior, Captain Peacock mentioned that it was time for the assistant salesman's tea break. When Humphries starts to leave he reminds him that he's the senior but that his allotted tea break was an hour previous.) Again, down to the writers' lack of detail and our anal-retentive attention to detail.

I wish the world was still civilized enough that a business could close for lunch. But now customers would be so angry and resentful to discover they had arrived at a closed store that you would lose too much business. I hope I don't live long enough to see the day when meal breaks disappear altogether. Mark my words, that day will come. :shakehead:

Along those same lines, when Trevor was playing Mr Merriweather on KUA, his shop also closed for lunch.

I think I'll take the day off tomorrow and hang an out to lunch sign on my cubicle. 8-D

I think the day has arrived. When I visit the Mall during the week most of the clerks in the smaller stores are sitting in chairs eating and drinking.
