Title:Our Figures Are Slipping
Season: 1
Eppy:3
Year: 1973
Show Run: 3
************************************************** *********
Mr. Rumbold wants to do a class in "salesmanship" because of falling figures. The class is anything but successful but we do learn a few things.
1. Rumbold doesn't know how to operate a lift.
2. Lucas has actually seen the movie "Bambi".
and
3. Young Mr. Grace can easily be sold his own coat.
Everyone has seen this eppy so let's discuss !!!

I like this eppy, I think there were better ones in the first series but it was a good episode, I was always a fan of the scenes with an in store meeting and I really enjoy this one, particuarly with reference to cheese buns.
Mr Grainger - 'Is there a softer one, this is very hard?'
Mr Humphries - 'I'll see if I can find you a softer one...'
Mr Lucas - 'Do you mind?! Those that you haven't squeezed around, he's had his chops around!'

The 'Do you mind??' sequence still has me crying with laughter every time I see it  Love this eppy.

This is an episode I can take or leave. To me, it seems to move rather slowly and just doesn't have the energy of many of the other episodes. Still, there are some cute jokes, and the storyline/plot is classic AYBS.

I love that scene myself.

i am not sure i understood the scene where rumbold has lucas bring in his sales record book? rumbold should have known that lucas is third in line to serve a customer.

But it gave us one of Lucas' best excuses.

I also enjoy the answer from Lucas to Rumbolds statement in this eppy:
Rumbold: "I always say: A happy salesman is a good salesman."
Lucas: "Yes, and a satisfied virgin is a virgin no longer."

Lucas: "Yes, and a satisfied virgin is a virgin no longer."
That is one of the best quotes of the series

There are some funny moments in this episode but and "Diamonds" rank as my least favorite episodes of the first season. They did staff meetings much better later on.

Looking back at it I realize there's a lot about this episode I like:
Lucas' excuse for his sales record, Mr. Rumbold's lift operating fail, the cheese danishes, "The Unsatisfied Virgin" lines, YMG easily being sold his own coat... and there's the firsts of Grainger falling asleep at work and Mrs. Slocombe's pussy being mentioned.
So I'd say this was a really good episode overall for me, I'd actually say it's even one of my favorites from the early part of the run; even though it's not quite typically the same energetic caliber of many of the episodes that followed it.

I've often wondered, since Lucas' sales (and the departments' sales) were so low, did Rumbold authorize a bill be sent to Mr. Grace for the cost of a Vicuna coat as it would have helped boost the sales figures? And if so, did Mr. Lucas get a commission for the sale?
Heck, I would have had suits and shirts sent up to Mr. Grace's office every week along with a note saying "Here are the clothes you requested yesterday sir. Don't worry, we'll bill your account!"
If that worked, I would have charged a bottle of champagne to his account, too. When he saw the bill, of course he would look at his secretary and ask, "When did we drink a bottle of champagne?" She wouldn't remember, then he would figure "I guess the champagne did the job! Sit on my knee and have another bottle sent up!" :wine:

Sometimes you need the "strolling" type eppys to make the rapid fire ones like "Oh What A Tangled Web" so good.
