Remember all the eps about wildcat transportation strikes, fuel shortages, electrical blackouts, inflation, and being broke on payday? Yes, it really was that bad.

I could never imagine that happening here, any decade!

You need to grab a history book of some sort. Unless you're joking. The 70's here in the USA were loaded with a recession, strikes, fuel shortages/energy crisis, lines for gasoline, soaring meat prices, government corruption, loss of jobs, the increase of recreational drug use....and more. It was worse here, in my opinion. But we had more interesting pop culture to help us through. We had David Cassidy. The Brits had Gary Glitter..... :(

I remember hearing about Britain's electrical blackouts on the news in the early 70's (I was in junior high). There was a coal-miner's strike, so Britain had only 3 days of electricity each week.

Remember it was the dark ages....no CDs, let alone DVDs, no Macs (got it right that time, huh?) or pcs....no internet (at least not as it is today), no
email , no online buying, no google or yahoo....

Yeah, but instead of being at the top of the charts, he's at the top of the CID's Most Wanted List !!!!

That wasn't my point though. I live in Canada, and to my knowledge, the 70s here were great. My parents say it was an awesome decade full of fun! 8)

To a point they were here in the States as well. Being a mere child at that time I guess I would view it like that. I remember one of the neighbors being shot because of gas cyphoning. I remember the "ODD and EVEN' gas lines, the truckers strike. But I also remember KISS, Godzilla, Disco, GREASE, Superfriends, and all that other cool stuff that was important to a 9 year old.

I had a great time in the 70s, other than a couple of times when it was hard to get gas (but we've had that recently too because of the effects of the hurricane season on the oil supply). I don't remember the 60s all that well, and the 80s-00s haven't been that stellar for me (other than the "Innernet"--thank goodness for Al Gore  ), but the 70s were fun.
(BTW, Apple was around in the late 70s, although the Mac wasn't introduced until 1984.)

I was 10-19 years of age in the 70's. So I remember all the bad political and governmental stuff...but looking back it was an amazingly carefree time. I'd go back there in an instant. When you're that age you aren't thinking of bad political and environmental things....you're putting on your funky 70's clothing and grooving to The Partridge Family. Looking back at The USA during this era, it was quite a mess, though. But then again...what era hasn't had its problems no matter where you are.

I was 10-19 years of age in the 70's.
So was I. I wasn't old enough to care about Watergate (except that it kept pre-empting my game shows  ). You know what I was doing when Nixon gave his resignation speech on television? Arguing with my cousin about his cheating at poker.
I can also tell you that the red state/blue state graphics for presidential election coverage were introduced in 1976 on NBC--and the colors were reversed (red states were Democratic, blue states Republican). We were wowed by that red/blue map behind John Chancellor. I don't know when the colors got switched (or why). :? I also remember wearing a Ford/Dole button to high school--because I thought the red, white, and blue colors were more attractive than Carter's green and white buttons. :shakehead:
I was irked by the previous remarks about the 70s being the "dark ages." Then I started to think about some of the shows I used to watch on Saturday afternoon (after "American Banstand" went off at noon-ish the pickings got really, really slim) . "The Porter Wagoner Show" (brought to you by Black Draught [don't ask]) (he sort of discovered Dolly Parton, who appeared on this show). Old-style Southern professional wrestling (way before the WWE). Old, bad movies (not shown as camp, either). If you made it through all that, the networks came to your rescue in prime-time (weren't shows like "All in the Family" and Mary Tyler Moore on Saturday nights?). Then, you went to bed (until "Saturday Night Live" began in 1975). Ah, the memories...

TV used to be something you'd look forward to. There were real "schedules" and they hardly ever waivered. Sat. night used to be fantastic! "All In The Family" (I think....it was on Sat.) Mary Tyler Moore, Bob Newhart, then one hour of Carol Burnett. Thursday nights used to be "The Waltons" night. Tuesday was "One Day At A Time" and Sunday was "Tony Orlando And Dawn" (now on DVD!) and "Sonny and Cher." I loved when Cher had her own show right after "60 Minutes." Oh...and Fridays we had the Partridge Family, followed by "The Brady Bunch" and then "Room 222." There were re-runs of "Here's Lucy" and "The Lucy Show" and "That Girl." I know I went out of order there...it was like a brain rush remembering all these shows! Now...I channel flip for days and usually end up on the Food Network watching some yahoo make candy canes!

Yes, that was what I was thinking about. Most of the classic shows you mentioned were on CBS, so we set the "automatic color" on our Motorola TV so that the CBS station would look the best. Really. "Sanford and Son" was on NBC, and I don't believe we watched many prime-time ABC shows (I hated "The Brady Bunch"), although I did watch "Room 222." There was also "The Midnight Special" at midnight on Fridays; if one of my favorite rock stars was appearing, I'd have my mom wake me up in time to see it (she wouldn't let me just stay up that late). Now I have to hope that the cable a la carte thing is approved so I can get rid of some of these channels I have to pay for just to get CNN and the like (we have two different Outdoor channels, as if one weren't enough).

My Blubber-In-Law and I were having a conversation on Thanksgiving about you had to "warm up" your TV set!! You'd have to crank that sucker up about 10 minutes before your fave show came on or you'd miss the opening numbers or themes. My 12 year old nephew was like "What do you MEAN?? Why didn't the TV's work right!?"

I loved the "OLD" Saturday morning line up from the 70's !!!!!! I loved Georgia Wrestling and AWA Wrestling !!!!!! And in the 70's, our "Channel 11 from New York" and "WPHL from Philly" used to show some of the "best bad movies" ever !!!!!

I was only 3 when you were born dear but I remember it all as if it were yesterday. I was one of those with a "childhood" in the 70's and the "teenage" years in the 80's. No wonder I turned out the way I did. Two totally different era's !!! :lol2:

Our Motorola not only featured "automatic color", it was also advertised as being "instant on", so it didn't have to warm up before you saw a picture. Were there sets sold in the 70s that had to warm up? In the 60s we had a black-and-white RCA TV from the Pleistocene era that had to warm up. (When my mom and I were shopping for a TV a few years ago, she was puzzled at the total lack of sets touting "automatic color." I told her TVs didn't need automatic color any more. :P )

I don't remember much about the "rasslin" except that Tojo Yamamoto was the bad guy most of the time. And, there was the match in which the bad guy's manager sat at ringside wearing a pink and white suit and carrying an umbrella. Every time his guy was in trouble, he came over and whacked the good guy with his umbrella. He also whacked the good guy's manager several times, as well as several spectators. If this had been real, this "pink penguin" character (other than the colors, he sort of looked like the Penguin from the 60s "Batman") would have certainly been arrested. It was really wild, and this is one pro wrestling clip I'd like to see again; I guess the footage no longer exists.

I don't remember much of the 70's but we certainly had lots of electrical blackouts in the eighties too. I remember the Jubilee though where we all had a street party in fancy dress - wouldn't see that these days.
Mostly I just remember things through old photos where I was a kid with bad long hair and purple dungarees! Nice.
Funny thing about watching ATYB? is that I recognise many outfits my parents wore and just things we used to have around the house like table wear and telephones and toys that were identical to what we had so it's a great nostalia trip.
