View Full Version : Relationships That Could Have Been

I was thinking about missed relationships that could have been, but never did, on the show. This thought came about bye comments like "seen in the copier closet" etc. I thought it would be fun for us to list the ones would have liked to seen. Here's mine:

Capt. Peacock and Ms. Brahms
Mrs. Slocombe and Mr. Harman
Mr. Humphries and Mr. Klein
Mr. Lucas and Ms. Belfridge
Mr. Mash and Canteen Manageress

and my favorite, the nurse (Vivienne Johnson) and me

Mrs Humphries and Old Mr Grace
Diana Yarswick and one of the two truck drivers
Nurse with the other truck driver

I've always wondered how it would've worked out if they'd made more of the brahms / lucas relationship. There seemed to be quite a few references to slocombe / humphries, with the 'almost marriages', the end part of the apartment, etc. It's when I watch eps like our figures are slipping or german week, when they talk about brahms / lucas going out, i just wonder what it would've been like if they'd made more of it.

Mr Humphries and Mr Franco
Miss Brahms with Mr Lucas

Yes, I had thought of those too, good ones.

Peacock with Mrs Slocombe

I had always felt Peacock acted as he wanted younger and hotter than her.

Peacock was ready for Mrs Slocombe untill he saw younger stuff so you might be right.

Mr Humphries and Miss Brahms - she was able to turn him on enough in "Erotic Dreams of Mrs Slocombe"

Mrs Slocombe and Mr Franco - He would respect someone of equal or greater brawn.

Capt. Peacock and Isabella Rye (secretary from Forward Mr Grainger) She was one of the few who welcomed his advances.

I can see Miss Brahms and Mr. Spooner dating. I think they'd be the type who'd date on and off. I also have my suspicions Mr. Humphries secretly had the hots for Cpt. Peacock, going by the way he reacted to being asked to stay behind in "Shedding the Load".

What a lovely couple :)

How about Mr Mash and Ivy?

I can definitely see this one happening. Both giving each other the "Whey Hey" in the tube.

I don't understand if Brahms and Spooner could hit it off then why couldn't Brahms and Lucas. They were basically the same type of person although Lucas was a bit more forward.

I can see Peacock and Humphries as well. Peacock is a randy gentleman who seems to strike out all the time with the ladies and with Peacock knowing that Humphries likes him, he might use the train of thought "Any port in a storm."

I always wondered if Mr. Rumbold had been a widower or a bachelor, would Mrs. Slocombe had used her feminine wiles to get her way?

From Mr. Grainger:

Mr. Humphries and Mr. KleinAs far as Mr. Humphries with one of the male staff, I imagine Mr. Grossman would have been more likely than Mr. Klein. There is something about that bow tie, outgoing nature, and how he fondled the leather on the women's shoes. Also the line, "Publish, and be damned!" that indicated a free-going nature.

Something tells me that Lucas once got too drunk near Mr. Humphries at some point. Maybe that's why he left in a hurry! It could also explain a few of the older men retiring quickly.

My guess is that she had relationships with Mr. Lucas, Captain Peacock, Mr. Rumbold, and Mr. Harman. {And maybe Mr. Walpole}.

And they were kept under the table.

And if JOE, fills this in ...... Miss Brahms and Mrs. Slocombe also.

Mr. Klein (or Kline) of Cutting -- "K for the Klein, C for the cutting -- the one whose wife had the fat ankles. I know he was in "Heir Apparent", but he was pretty forgettable. I can't recall any other scene at the moment.

I think Mr. Klein's finest moment (apart from his monologue about his wife's fat ankles) came in the box at Covent Garden:

:spoonerhead: : "Have they all forgotten the words?"
:klein: : "They don't have words in ballet, you ignorant berk!"

BTW: "berk" is also a bit of rhyming slang. I'll leave finding out the meaning as an exercise to the reader.

Getting back to relationships that should have been on the show...me and Miss Thorpe.

Mr. Humphries and Mr. Walpole of Sports

There's a scene for you ... Slocombe swings by Mr. Humphries house to give him a lift to work. Slocombe is standing in the living room of Humphries house when a door opens and Mr. Walpole walks out buck naked out of the bathroom asking Humphries where he keeps the towels and Humphires looks at Slocombe a little embarrassed and a lot of excited.

I think it would be funny if Mrs. Slocombe and Mr. Lucas secretly had an affair.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who sees the possibilities in that! It could be a May-December romance with the spice that they come from two different worlds...but I see both of them wanting to keep it a secret for different reasons. Mrs. Slocombe is so class-conscious that to be seen with such a younger and common man like Mr. Lucas would embarass her to no end. Mr. Lucas, on the other hand, would want to keep it a secret since he'd probably be teased about it, also to no end.

I love this explanation.

Personally I doubt anything intimate ever went on between Lucas and Humphries, but at times, I really found myself thinking, "There's got to be fanfiction written about this pairing somewhere..." They were the ultimate Relationship That Could Have Been.
