My 2 alma maters were playing in their respective football championship tournaments this weekend. The University of North Alabama won in overtime to advance to the Division II semi-final game (http://www.timesdaily.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20051127/NEWS/511270361/1019/SPORTS). UNA always has a built-in advantage whenever they make the playoffs: the school hosts the Divisioni II football championship every year. OTOH, my old high school failed again to win the Alabama 5A (largest schools are 6A, smallest are 1A) state football championship, losing in a semi-final game (http://www.timesdaily.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20051126/NEWS/511260337/1019/SPORTS). The last time RHS won the state football championship, Lyndon Johnson was president and I was in the second grade. :( When I was in high school in the late 70s, the football team was extremely bad (they had to beat up on dinky schools to keep from being 0-10), so I wish they could win the state championship again in our lifetime instead of coming so close every year (for the past several years, they've either made the semi-finals or finals each year). Well, Go Lions!

Thanks, guys. I wish I'd bought the "I'm a Big Fish: TUNA" T-shirts the student bookstore used to sell when I was a student at UNA; the slogan is either sublime or ridiculous, but I can't decide which.

The high school football championships are on my TV right now, and the team that beat us is losing by 35 points at halftime. :D :D :D

They eventually lost 45-13. Sweet. :D Now I've got to root UNA on to victory today in their semi-final game today. Roar Lions!

UNA's game is on TV right now, and it's been going for them like Young Mr. Grace's yacht ("up and down, up and down"). They're behind by 1 point with 23 seconds left in the game. Waiting to see what happens before I click "submit"...UNA loses 25-24.   Now there's a fight on the field, booing from the pro-UNA crowd, the Florence Police Department's finest, etc. The victorious coach boasts "the magic's still here for us in Florence" and claims next week's championship game will be like a home game for his team. I already want to ship this guy back to Missouri. He's being disrespectful to UNA, talking like that while standing in UNA's stadium. I hope they lose next week 50-0.

Don't worry, they'll get their turn in the end. That man boasts, and no good ever comes from boasting like that...Trust me.
