I don't know why, but this go around through the Grace and Favour series, I've been preoccupied with Mr. Moulterd's hat.
In AYBS?, they occasionally talk about the different hat styles (bowlers, pork-pies, Homburgs, etc.).
anyone know what kind of hat was Morris' when it was new?

I hadn't thought about Morris' hat at all. I've been preoccupied with Mavis knickers.

It must be the weather. Right now I could use more cool shade than steam heat!

Maybe it was just a battered trilby that he'd had since he was a rat catcher in Tiverton, snd got crushed when he was rolling in the hay with a young landgirl named Rachel Yiddle

It could be boredom, the heat, mid-life crisis, actual insanity, or a combination of all, but I'm increasingly interested in trying to find a hat like Mr. Moulterd's to wear. But the more I look, the harder it is to find one that looks close enough and that makes me want one even more.
I sure hope it's just the heat! I can't afford craziness at the moment.

With the heat wave we are having, wanting a Moulterd hat is not the worst you could be hankering for..............I'll keep a look out and do some ebay internet searches. I'll let you know if I find anything

Envision the hat as new instead of trampled and beaten.

Now I'm wondering where you buy a rat catcher's coat! The next time I go buy a suit, I'm going to ask to see their rail of rat catcher's gear.

I think it was just a jacket commonly worn by working men. Moulterd wore when he was a rat catcher, and he called it his ratting coat out of nostalgia for the days when he rolled in the hay with land girls

It looks like one of those left over from German Week...he must have lost his feather or brush some time ago.

Perhaps Moulterd actually bought it at Grace Brothers during German Week, on a visit to the Big Smoke. During the intervening years of hard farm work between then and G&F, it gradually got more and more beat-up, until it became the shapeless wreck seen in G&F.
