I found it hysterical that they were always flush with cash, due to all the overtime they put in. Meanwhile, the white-collar workers were struggling to make it to payday. Sometimes, it pays to be lower middle class.

Perfect example of how the whole class system works. The rest of the staff complained that "The wrong people had all the money" yet everytime it came to being offered overtime, they complained.

They might not have been paid extra for working.....

When you work on a commossion you will understand.

I DO!

And I don't like giving up my extra time unless it's for my customers.

Not for their {the big shots} nit-pick and gripe meetings.

You get paid so much a month...And no overtime...or to live you will sell and may some money, by ways of a commission..

And their commisions couldn't have been much seeing as how they had
very few customers..... Lucas notices that in the pilot.

In the words of Mrs. Slocombe, They had been diddled and I am unanimous in that.

That's why I love working salary: The more hours, the more cash!
The poor manager has to put in at least 40 hours a week, and any more, she still gets the same amount of money.

To both points by Lucas and GWW, the phrase I heard over and over was
why couldn't this meeting be done "on the firm's time". I take that to mean
that they would not get paid anything for that time spent; let alone overtime pay.
Another point to remember is sometimes overtime pay involves
a different pay rate(e.g. time and a half, etc.), whereas regular pay
for time outside of store hours is still the same rate.(these pay rules differ depending on country and business and era [i.e. 1970's regs would not be the same as 21st century ones...most likely] )
..and of course, hours spent
outside store hours have no customers so no chance of commission either.
