Why do you think Lucas always insulted Mrs. Slocombe. Was it that he really liked her ? That he always thought she was a bit abover herself and he liked to knock her down a peg or two ? Lucas really couldn't stand Slocombe but he couldn't murder her so insulting was the next best thing.
Vote and let us know why you voted like that.

I went with the "She thought she was a bit above herself and he did it to knock her down" because that the way I always seen it.
I don't think he hated her really he just didnt like the airs she put on.

 Agreed. He did seem to take delight in letting her know that he knew she thought she was above him and he did it in a not mean way. Never thought he was mean-spirited, only wanted to get his digs in and not be hurtful. Mr. Spooner on the other hand was often just mean.

I went with friendly teasing because I always have thought Lucas did it because he thought making sarcastic remarks was funny and he was driven to be funny in order to get attention. Probably stems from coming from a poor part of Highgate and having an asthmatic cat.

I don't think there was real malice there...I think she was just an easy target for his teasing, and she always reacted to it.

I think it's #2 with a side of #4. I think he always liked her a little.
I always wondered more what was up with those rare times she responded flirtatiously instead of angrily. More brandy in the atomizer?

:lol: And having a broken gas ring would certainly make one have an inferiority complex.

I always saw it as a bit of harmless fun on his part. He took the mick out of them all in some form or other. Nobody was safe from his whitty banter.

I said just a bit of friendly teasing. He did cry a little and try to help when she stood up by the Greek fellow in Do You Take This Man?

Just a bit of friendly teasing. I must say now we are almost 40 years after the first series, humour is becoming more rude, so when you have asked me the same question back than (it was not possibele because i was born in 1976) i might have given another answer.
I love the nice way the characters made jokes.
