Do they still exist in British stores? If not, when did they die out?

Funny you should ask that. I was watching AYBS last night when DH came home and he asked the same question. He said what a damn boring a job do they really still exist? I have no idea.

I wouldn't see them being needed that much. When I watch Aybs?, I think it is ridiculous that they would pay somebody to do what Captain Peacock did. The sales people can do that themselves. :D

I would venture a guess and say upscale London dept. stores such as Harrod's still have the equivalent of "floorwalkers" but the term has probably been changed and the duties expanded. Like "secretary" is now "Assistant" and "Receptionist" is now "Front Desk Coordinator." Back to floorwalker, it all boils down to standing around looking snooty. Been to London...seen it.

When I was a wee little lad, we had "Floorwalkers" in our J.C. Penny's store in town. I always thought they were weird because you just walked in the store and they ask you if they could help you find something.... "I just walked in the door, give me time to look !!!"

Part of their job is to expedite. "Looking for anything particular, sir?" I know a lot of men who want to get in there, get what they need, and get out as soon as they can. I think women are more inclined to browse at their leisure. I can tell you that I hate when salespeople follow me all over, pestering me. "This color would be WONDERFUL with your blue eyes...and here's a bag to match!!" I just walk away and smile.

And in this case, Peacock didn't even have to show the customers any particular items. He just had to direct the customer 3 ways: Gents, Ladies, or the Washrooms.

Are they that much different than the elderly greeters you find at Walmart?

Aww, those people are so sweet! They always give me a smiley face sticker and tell me to have a great day. And they always wear such a nice smile.

Floorwalkers....sounds like the title to a new movie.
I'm in Wellington, New Zealand and the really top-class department store here has a floor walker. They stand near the main door/entrance and direct you to the part of the store you want, if you look at all lost.
I would think they would still have them in Britain too. Though possibly not quite in the Peacock style!
