We know that nepotisim was alive and well at Grace Bros. Young Mr Grace inherited the store from his uncle Mr Grace Senior, and then he handed over to his brother Old Mr Grace. But there were other examples of the multiple use of names. While in reality is was probably just a plt device, in the storyline, could it indicate other examples of nepotism?

Theobold - In "The hand of Fate" the chain of events was started by the retirement of a board member, Mr Theobold who was retireing due to ill health caused by two bottles a day. In "The Apartment" while putting together Mrs Slocombe flat, Harman asked Warwick if he should "fetch up Theobold". Could maintenance man Theobold been an underachieving but more sober relation (brother, nephew, cousin) of the board member?

Hepburn - In "The Punch and Judy Affair" Capt. Peacock mentioned a Miss Hepburn as head of the Pet Dept. There was also a Miss Hepburn as Miss Bathroom Fittings in the beauty contest in "Front Page Story". Could Miss Bathroon Fittings be the neice of the Head of the Pet Dept?

Prentise - In "Happy Returns", Mr Rumbold mentioned that when he was a Junior, he worked under a Mr Prentise who was greatly respected and would never have worn odd socks. A mention in "Dear Sexy Knickers" indicates Rumbold had originally worked in Hardware, so it can be presumed that Mr Prentise was Manager of the Hardware Dept. In the Pub Fight episode of G&F, Rumbold mentioned that his wife left him for Mr Prentise of Tools and Do It Yourself, which is pretty much another way of saying Hardware. Someone who was a manager when Rumbold was a Junior, would probably be long dead, so was the Mr Prentise who cuckolded Rumbold, and offered Mr Humphries some strange attachments for his Black and Decker, be the son of Rumbold's mentor, and was following in his father's footsteps, work wise?

Featherstone - In "Sweet Smell of Success" Rumbold mentioned that he was also managing the Toiletries Dept in the absense of Mr Featherstone. This may also be the same Mr Featherstone who in "Heir Apparent" was mentioned as having sneezed and blown his Employee of the Month Trophy into the fire. Then there was Miss Featherstone, who in "Goodbye Mrs Slocombe" briefly took over for Mrs Slocombe as Senior of the Ladies Counter. Were they brother and sister?

Goddard - Most of the time appeared as YMG's driver. In "It Pays to Advertise" he appeared as the maintenace man carrying the Mr Humphries display dummy in a way that made Mr Humphries uncomfortable. In subsequent episodes, Goddard was once again the driver, so this could indicate two seperate characters, perhaps twin brothers.

Grainger - The was of course Mr. Grainger the head of the Gents departments and then from "Heir Apparent" there was Annie Grainger who was in the "Golden Garter Girls" who OMG mistakenly thought was Mr. Humphries mother.
Could that have been Mr. Grainger's sister ??

OR - and this is going to sound crazy - Annie Grainger, 'the girl who couldn't say no' is in fact the same girl from Haberdashery that Mr Grainger got in the club! Perhaps he married her, but they divorced a little while later - and Annie kept the name :yes:

Also, let's not forget that Mr Grainger always holidayed at Mrs Featherstone's in Littlehampton.

Perhaps Mrs. Featherstone, proud member of the LALA (Littlehampton Landladies' Association) offered a discounted rate at her place for Grace Brothers' employees, in appreciation of the firm employing so many of her namesakes and/or relatives.

Or Mrs Featherstone may have been a direct relative of the Featherstones in the store, and given Mr Grainger a discount for that reason :yes:

Apropos of very little, I've noticed that two of the three principals in tomorrow's British election are namesakes of AYBS? guest characters:

"Candid" (David) Cameron - photographer who buys a black gabardine mac from Mr. Humphries, the better to perfect his exposure;

Mr. (Nick) Clegg - in Big Brother, the ex-CID man in charge of Grace Brothers' security.

I don't remember a Mr. Brown being mentioned anywhere in AYBS?, though.

Thorpe - There was Miss Thorpe, temporary secretary to Mr Rumbold, who had A unique filing system (emphasis on the "A") and Mr Thorpe, solisitor to Young Mr Grace. Could Miss Thorpe be the granddaughter of Mr Thorpe?
