I love them all! But is there any character(s) that can sometimes annoy you?
I know that the canteen lady worker which I don't know her name can be annoying to me because she just yells at Captain Peacock and the rest of the staff all the time.

Actually I enjoyed the first Mrs. Peacock. I wish she had been more episodes because she was the most paranoid character I've ever seen. She was just the kind of wife Captain Peacock needed to keep him out of trouble.
I always thought Ms. Yardwick was annoying.

Throughout the series, I find them all annoying at times. However, I think Humphrie's mother takes the cake. Although, young Mr. Grace got on with her well enough to secure her son a job so she can't be all that bad.

Yes Old Mr. Grace for me as well. I just never liked him and thought it was rather silly that Old Mr. Grace was younger in appearance than Young Mr. Grace. Besides which, wouldn't the phrase "Old Mr. Grace" refer to his father?
I also hated Wendy Richard in the episode where Old Mr. Grace gave her a lift in his Rolls and tried to molest her. Her acting style (while Capt. Peacock was questioning her) was exactly like Kenneth Waller's (OMG) and with that daft frizzy hairstyle she had for that one episode she just looked dead stupid. (and this from someone who loved Wendy Richard in her role as Ms. Brahams).

Old Mr. Grace for me. For one thing, was that a fake bald head on him? Young Mr. Grace had a certain innocence to his lechery and you didn't think of him as being a dirty old man, but Old Mr. Grace didn't have the charm to soften his character.

I know she was only on one episode, but that cleaner (the skinnier one) on "The Pop Star" got on my nerves. She wouldn't stop yelling when the group was trying to perform, and she just looked like one of those naturally annoying people you would meet in life. No offence if you read this, I'm sure you are very nice!

Mr Goldberg was the one that annoyed me the most. I would have prefered it if they had managed to get his storyline correct and then I don't think he would have annoyed me so much.
For example in Anything You Can Do, I thought he would know the age old army trick that Captain Peacock knew. (Why are we waiting  )

After his first episode, where's he's first starting off at Grace Bros., there are a few other episodes where he talks like he's been working at GB forever; like in "Anything..." he talks about how the canteen "used to make" such-and-such dish really well. Probably they just took old Grainger or Tebbs scripts and changed their lines to Goldberg's without being very particular about his backstory.

I agree with both of you. The first one did look awfully manly, and that voice made me laugh, she sounded more manly than Peacock himself. The first one just aggravated the jeebers out of me, and had a freaky face, one I will never forget as hard as I try.

I had to really think about this one. I think Old Mr. Grace is the one that always bugs me. Mr. Spooner had his moments but he wasn't too annoying for me. Another one who very occasionally got on my nerves was Mr. Grainger...normally he was just a "harmless old fool" but on a few occasions it became really annoying. In AYBS? the movie, he drove me NUTS! He crossed the line from harmless old fool to just plain obnoxious (like when they were on the plane and he was looking for the loo.) He reminded me of one of those people you see in the store who stand obliviously in the middle of the walkway acting as if it's the first time they've ever been out in public. He really needed a chaperone or something.
As for the 2 Mrs. Peacocks...I have to add my 2 cents. I just started watching Fawlty Towers for the very first time and I cracked up when I realized one of the guests at the hotel was played by Diana King. It's funny I could recognize her so easily even though she was only on AYBS a couple of times---does this mean I've watched AYBS too much?
As for the other Mrs Peacock (Diana Lambert)...well I didn't have an opinion of her one way or the other the first time I saw her (when she and Captain Peacock were both in drag... I thought that was hilarious.) It really did suit her! However, in her other appearance (was that Friends and Neighbors? I can't recall) where she was dressed in regular women's clothes, she she creeped me out. She should have stuck to dressing in drag.!

Dear Dazz and Greg
I LIKED Mr. Grossman and Mr. Klein !
They didn't have a chance the way they had their characters wrote into the show...
They were given very Bland and Extra Type roles, with no real PERSONALITIES of their OWN !
And with a Sr. Salesman, there was a lot more things to write with and about.
Or have an Extra salesman somewhere.
They didn't replace Old Ernest ! ___ No One Did !
The last three years the writing became a chore and not a pleasure.

Oddly enough I've never run across anyone the show who annoyed me. The later heads of gents ready-made didn't have enough lines and weren't around long enough to annoy me.
No-one's mentioned the two that come to mind for me.
Rumbold's last secretary - the one that was heavily involved in the last season - I think the actor was Candy Davis.
And Mr Grace's last secretary - who was I think played by Debbie Linden.
If you think about most of the earlier secretaries, they actually did some secretarial work and the sex jokes were a joke... by this time they really had no role other than to stick their breasts out. Which to me changes the nature of the joke....
Greg WibblyWobbly
12-27-2006, 05:25 AM
Debbie Linden (OMG last secretary) never did a stitch of work as far as I know and her prime objective was to show up bra-less so her nipples stuck out. Not that I mind that but she really didn't add anything to the story. She was strictly "eye candy".
Candy Davis (Miss Belfridge) actually did do some work. They played her as an idiot at first but then gave her an "O" level in English Lit. But in the long run, she was the "eye candy" of Rumbolds office.
Goes to show that if we ask ourselves, was it the change of times since the show ran so long ? Sex was a huge thing in late 70's-early 80's comedy OR was it that the show was beginning to take a dive in originality and to hold onto the audience, the writers had to put in a bit of cheesecake ???

The 'O' level is appearantly also a joke Greg.
The GCE was originally introduced in England, Wales (http://www.answers.com/topic/england-and-wales) and Northern Ireland (http://www.answers.com/topic/northern-ireland) in 1951, replacing the older School Certificate (SC) and Higher School Certificate (http://www.answers.com/topic/higher-school-certificate-uk) (HSC). It was intended to cater for the increased range of subjects available to pupils since the raising of the school leaving age from 14 to 15 in 1947. The examinations were graded into ordinary level for 16-year-olds, and advanced level for 18-year-olds. There was also an intermediate level alternative ordinary level (AO-level) and a higher special paper (S-level)

I hated Old Mr Grace. Kenneth Walleer had no acting-qualitaties what so ever and I didn't lough about one of his jokes at all. I was glad that after one season the writers sacked him.
Young Mr. Grace (Harold Bennett) was lovely, every line of him did me laugh, infact: just when he made an expression, everyone laughed about him.
In fact: After Bennett left first the writers would Arnold Ridley (the loveble Mr. Godfrey from Dad's Army) as Old Mr Grace, but he refused. He said in that period: "There's only one Mr. Grace and that's Harold Bennett. There's no one that could possibly replace him, so I wouldn't accept the part of Old Mr. Grace. I'm (it was 1981) 85 years old now, my acting-career has ended."
Very true words of Ridley, who daid at the age of 88 in 1984.

Yes, but Mike Berry thought he could step into Bannisters shoes. He was wrong, because Bannister was funny, and Berry would like to be funny, but wasn't.
The same thing about Kenneth Waller and James Hayter, they were also no good replacebles of Harold Bennett and Arthur Brough.
I have a lot of respect for Arnold Ridley who refused to pick up the role off Old Mr. Grace. Now we remember him as the lovely Mr. Godfrey of Dad's Army, where he lived in a nice cottage with his sisters Dolly and Cissy. In every eppy he said: 'Can I be excused?'. Simple, but brilliant.
I can remember an episode where he and John Laurie (Private Frazer) had to pick up Mr. Bluett (played by Harold Bennett).
Mainwairing: "Godfrey, pick him up, he's only an old man."
Godfrey: "He's not as old as I am."

I am not so sure that Mike Berry came into the role thinking he could replace Trevor. I think Mike Berry took the role in AYBS? as a job....just like any actor would. It was an opportunity and he knew what Trevor had done. His lines, funny or not, were the result of script writers, and not of his own doing. Mike Berry's funniest moment on AYBS? came when he was filmed with his fly open and his shirt poking out from it. A "blooper" of which I am proud to have first found and reported!

There where some chanigings in the cast during AYBS. Here my opinion if the second one was better as the actor he replaced.
Mr. Harmon for Mr. Mash (English/Martin) => yes, Engelish was better
Mr. Tebbs for Mr. Grainger (Hayter/Brough) => No, Grainger was better
Mr. Goldberg for Mr. Mr. Tebbs (Bass/Hayter) => Yes, Goldberg was better than Hayter, but not far as good as Grainger
Old Mr. Grace for YMG (Waller/Bennett) => Is there in the world anyone who things Waller was better? I can't imagine it.
Mr. Spooner for Mr. Lucas (Berry/Bannister) => Bannister was brilliant, Spooner not bad, but not far as good as Trevor. I often wonder the way Bannister has played the lines of Berry.
Mr. Grossman for Mr. Goldberg (Sperber/Bass) => Grossman was the worst senior salesman ever.
Mr. Klein for Mr. Grossmann (Lee/Sperber) => Mr. Klein played better than Mr. Grossman but his role was very little.
Mrs. Peacock I / Mrs. peacock II (King/Lambert) => I think Diana King played the role very good, Diana Lambert was (in my opinion) a man in womens-clothes.
The role that was replayed most often was that of the Senior Salesman by the men. My favorites:
1. Mr. Grainger (Arthur Brough)
2. Mr. Goldberg (Alfie Bass)
3. Mr. Tebbs (James Hayter)
4. Mr. Klein (Benny Lee)
5. Mr. Grossmann (Milo Sperber)

And I think you should cut Mike Berry some slack Ronald, like the others have said, somebody had to take the place as a Junior.

Yes, but Mike Berry thought he could step into Bannisters shoes. He was wrong, because Bannister was funny, and Berry would like to be funny, but wasn't.
I agree with you Ronald....he was pretty awful in the role. He was never able to find himself properly in it and that's mainly because Mike Berry was a lousy actor. He was a singer by trade and he should have stayed there. He relied on what we here in the USA call "snark". He played the role as a mean-spirited guy as opposed to "cute, naughty boy". There's a big difference and it never came off.

My least favorite episodes are those that include Spooner and OMG. For me Lucas was funny, Spooner was forced and not very funny. Having just recently seen and enjoyed Trevor in the KUA episode, I am convinced it was Trevor that made the roll of Lucas come alive. I am sure he would have been equally convincing as Spooner. It may be in his timing, delivery of the lines, or facial expressions/body language. I really don't think it was the writing. As for OMG... Bennett was very lovable, epecially in the later episodes. (I am particularly fond of his perforance where he sang and did that 'finger puppet' thing, even though I still cannot make out all of his words). OMG is just plain ghastly!

Got to agree with you Miss P. I had a boss once named Shaughn who was a true Mr. Rumbold. And to top it off at Christmas parties his partner was a true Miss Belfrige! Ha what a pair they were!
I quite like Rumbold despite all the bad points - there's something sorta vulnerable about him despite the pomposity and insensitivity. He is after all as trapped as anyone else on the show. He is brilliantly played by Nicholas Smith I think - despite the unattractiveness of the character, physically and culturally, there's something sympathetic about him.

I loved Mr Rumbold. It always struck me that he wanted to come across as one of the boys without actually lowering himself too much. It was all about class and structure with Rumbold and I thought that gave some great moments in AYBS. I loved the occassions when Rumbold was asked to play the piano or sing and I thought the way he always misunderstood complaints or accounts of stories were little quirks of a generally silly character who surely wasn't intelligent enough to be a Head of Department?
I disliked Mr Spooner intensly and I think that he was a poor replacement for Mr Lucas. I also didn't warm very much to Mr Grossman.

I didn't like Old Mr. Grace either when I first saw him. I was like "WHO is THAT?!?!" His appearance was rather frightening to me and I never really warmed up to him.

In my viewing experience, none of the characters have ever been annoying, not even Diana Yardswick the Canteen Manageress (who despite her obnoxiousness was still funny as hell). I never geled with Messrs. Grossman and Klein, mainly because they were both in the eighth series and only that series at that. Even though Messrs. Tebbs and Goldberg were on one series apiece, they did add a lot to Grace Brothers (Tebbs who was even more pompous than Mr. Grainger, and Goldberg who had his own agenda).

To me, Mash and Harman were annoying and I could also put the Miss Brahms character into the "annoying" slot as well. This meaning if I were cooped up 8-9 hours a day working with them I'd have to scream. :eek3: But "annoying" is funny at times. And in the case of these characters it was funny almost always. :lavinia:

mr rumbold annoyed me sometimes, only when he was being a prat and lying about the reward in 'diamonds...' and using a heater whilst letting the staff freeze in 'cold comfort'.
I prefered mash to harmon...
Mr tibbs (tebbs) annoyed me too - i much prefered arthur brough as grainger and i think they should have left out the senior part in future series rather than replace him :(

Totally agree with you on this one. I absolutely can't stand the Harman character. He got entirely too many lines and too much air time. He never did or said anything I thought was remotely amusing.

I agree..All the seemingly Carbon Copies were a bit annoying. Although I give spooner some credit he was ok, and Tebbs, well, yeah but honestly I think he could have developed into something more had Hayter not gotten entangled in the cracker scandal or whatever.
Honestly, now don't hate me people...but in the later years Miss Brahms really got on my nerves. When the show first started she had a sort of street class. She may have been a common girl but she had a sharp wit and common sense...and as the series progressed she lost all that and became, for lack of a better word...extremely ditzy. In the later years Wendy Richards talent was, in my opinion, grossly underused as Miss Brahms seemed to lose more and more of what made her to be so great early on.

How can we hate you for having you own opinion ?? You know honestly through the years how many people have said this very same thing and I'm more or less inclined to agree. She lost her sparkle after the 6-7 seasons and again IMHO I think that this has to do with the "Mollie and John Show" therory. Everyone else of importance was written out and the show was no longer an ensemble piece.
