Do you think the latter series could have been better if the writer played down the friendships more a bit and kept the fighting between the Ladies and the Men's department's or do you think they went as far with as they could ?

Call me an old softie, but I do quite like seeing them all stand up for each other in the later series. It kind of echoes their friendships off-screen.

I think that's another point where it went downhill. Peacock should have remained the pain in the butt he was in the early years. You need the antagonist in any show and by the 9th Series, there was very little of it.

No matter how much I like it when Peacock stands with the staff, there is indeed a lot more suspense when he's fighting against them. And losing Mr Grainger and Mrs Slocombe's epic battles over the centre stand (not to mention them constantly trying to win the whole floor for their own departments) did the show no good.

You can always find more to argue about. It's nice to see them be friends, but friction is part of comedy.

I'd say that I like the idea of Peacock vs. the staff continuing. However, the conflict of Slocombe/Grainger men's vs. women's department could only last for so long.

I think the friction was a huge part of the show. They could have evened out the playing field in the latter series if they would have made Rumbold a complete monster that Peacock and the staff could have revolted against but warts and all, you ended up liking Rumbold a little.

I always thinks that's the genius of Nicholas Smith's acting because really Rumbold never does anything nice or seem sympathetic to any of the staff at all or ever make a good joke... yet somehow you do sorta like him...

I call it "sympathic stupidity".
