Very Young Mr Grace

I was watching this episode last evening and almost fell off my couch from laughter at one particular scene!

It's toward the very end of the show after Young Mr. Grace told Rumbold that he was to avoid "bald men with glasses". Lucas and Humphries are at the counter talking about how Humphries may have been wrong with his prediction from reading Rumbold's palm. At that point we hear the CRASH in the other room when Peacock fell off the ladder.

Well, Humphries rushes to the room to see what happened, doing his usual feminine walk, and Lucas runs right behind him, doing the SAME WALK with a sheepish grin on his face!

That little clip only lasts about 3 seconds, but I never really noticed it before. I wonder if Lucas did that as a bit of improv during the scene. I had to rewind the scene and watch it again! It's hilarious! Even when the camera cuts to Peacock on the floor, you can still hear the audience laughing at Lucas walking behind Humphries! Classic!

Excellent observation!
I love that part myself, it is the little things that can really make a scene funny. One of my favourites is in "The Think Tank" when Mr.Humphries goes to the Lost and Found department, and returns to say that the man who ran it lost the key!

In this episode I also liked the bit where Mr. Grainger awards to Peacock to talk about the new floorwalker (because it seems that Rumbold takes over from Mr. Theobald and Peacock will take over from Rumbold). Grainger wants that job for over 15 years.

Grainger: 'I take it that you will advice them to give it to me?'
Peacock: 'What?'
Grainger: 'Your job of course'
Peacock: 'I doud it.'
Grainger: 'Doud it?'
Peacock: 'I think it will take a younger man to coop with it'
Grainger: 'Coop, Coop. All you do is to stand there with your nose in the air. Sometimes you say: Are you free, Mr. Grainger?'
Peacock: 'I also must check the bills, make sure, the are properly maded out'
Grainger: 'Every damn fool can do that.'

Lucas dit not only does Mr. Humphries' way of walking, he also talked sometimes like him.

(In fact: Also Young Mr. Grace dit it a few times, for example in By Appointment)

I don't think it's very likely to have been improvised. They would have rehearsed everything over and over and over as the shows were filmed in front of an audience. Obviously they couldn't film scenes again and again in front of an audience or by the 12th time no-one would have been laughing, so it would have been an absolute priority to get things right at rehearsal and to perform it exactly as rehearsed. The actors might have some - very limited - input at rehearsal, but it would have been totally unprofessional for Bannister to add things when they were filming.
