Title: The Club
Season: 6
Eppy: 2
Year: 1978
Show Run: 36
When the staff is offered a room to start a Club, they are excited. That is until they see the room. Their spirits are further dampened when it's found that they can't have it because the decorator will cost too much. But in true "Server" fashion, they fancy they can do it themselves but soon find it much easier to sling knickers and Y-fronts then it is to redo an impossible room.
What are your feeling on this eppy ??
Let's discuss !!!!

The last half of this episode (in the basement) is one of the best AYBS scenes of the whole series:
The MM air whoosh with Miss Brahms
The wallpaper cutting using Mr Humphries' inside leg
The ladies moving furniture
Harman with the wood on his head
"you can use that bit over the door"
The wallpaper paste fight
So much good stuff packed into that last 18-20 minutes

A good dynamic episode with plenty of nicely-done slapstick: Arthur English's turn-under-the-plank makes me laugh every time I see it.

He does do that very well. And if you watch closely; after he walks out of the room, you can see the shadow of the plank as he lowers it off his head. The shadow projects into the club room.

I love this episode! so many funny bits in it. Even after watching it as many times as I have, there are a few parts that never fail to make me laugh, the main ones being...
in the canteen, after mr humphries says he knows people in different walks of life...
mr lucas: yeah, and i've seen some of their different walks!
in the basement...
*mr harman turning round under the plank
*capt peacock and mrs slocombe and the paste being slapped in the face
*mr lucas being flipped off the matress by the women when they pick it up
*mr lucas and mr humphries turning the paper and mr humphries' response when capt peacock tells him to turn the same way as mr lucas
i do love pretty much all the basement scene though :)

When you consider the size of the room you can imagine only a ping pong table and that's about it fitting into it. Don't imagine there would have been space for a jukebox anyway, so Mr. Tebbs would have had no worries.
I love Mrs. Slocombe's face after Captain Peacock flicks wallpaper paste on her. Priceless!

This is an eppy I can gladly do without. The whole thing is tedious and the entire "club" scene is really bad timed Three Stooges fare. Don't get me wrong ... the Three Stooges knew how to do it right. The whole eppy just has that feel that it was completely dragged out and that they could have done the same thing in 13 minutes. Totally silly and it's actually an eppy I avoid. I put it right up there with "Heir Apparent" and "Is It Catching ?"

I see where you're coming from Greg; the laughs are in the acting and not the plot. Perhaps it's the presence of YMG, but whilst I would agree totally in that the other two episodes are ones I avoid, I still like watching this one. Certainly in plot terms, though, this one's a dip from the earlier years.

If I ever made a list of my least favorite Lucas-era episodes this would probably be somewhere on it. There are some good lines and gags ("two inches to play with" comes to mind first), but overall it feels like a fluffy filler episode. I hate to be down on the Tebbs episodes, because I really think James Hayter was excellent, but most of the episodes from that year feel this way.

I've been waiting for any man who is a man to stand-up and be counted (as Captain Peacock would say), so I'll put-in my two cents. I agree with Greg. This episode seems dragged-out, and the club room redecorating scene just doesn't do it for me. I like a few of the jokes during the scene, such as Mrs. Slocombe showing-up the men when it comes to handy work and Mr. Harmon turning around with the board on his head, but on the other hand, I don't think the scene was shot very well. When Captain Peacock rips the wallpaper over his head, you can see him do it on purpose; it was no accident. When Mr. Humphries walks in carrying the cups of tea, you can see him hold the tray as he waits for the bucket to be placed on his head so he can throw the cups in the air. When they turn-on the vent system, you can see Mr. Tebbs force Miss Brahm's skirt up. Overall, that whole scene was too forced. I agree with Greg: it was very Three Stooges.

To agree with what red shadow said, the part with capt peacock pulling the wallpaper over his head always annoyed me for some reason. Maybe it was because it was obvious that he was doing it, but I've never really liked that bit

He even looks towards the camera with an expression of "Are we going to shoot this scene over, or should I tear the paper myself....oh, I'll tear it myself" look.

The only bit I chuckle at throughout the whole of the eppy is when Peacock slaps the paste on Slocombe.
But then ... that's the only part.

I loved this episode. It is always fun to see the staff away from their usual duties in their own department. I think the club would have been fun if they had ever finished it!

i still didn't like mr. tebbs snotty attitude about having a juke box, i mean captain peacock asked ms. brahms what she would like and i liked her suggestion. also i was glad she poured that bucket of glue over his head, he deserved it.

I suppose that is one true thing about this episode: some people got what they deserved, such as Captain Peacock with the paintbush down his pants.

oh I love that part... her face when that happens is priceless.
Overall I thought the episode was okay. Not the best. And there were some bits I just didn't care for; namely the vent and Miss Brahms' skirt, the tea tray, and Captain Peacock and the wallpaper.

Even though I'm not all that fond of this episode, I do think the joke where Mrs. Slocombe unrolls more of the wallpaper and says "If I cut it here, that'll leave us with 2 inches to play with" is one of the best jokes in the entire series.

That's one of the examples of "cushioning" the eppy. That joke (IMHO) was just flat and felt like filler to lengthen the eppy.

Mr. Humphries, you're standing like that again....
Mrs. Tebbs and I spent the whole of our honeymoon stripping off downstairs......I dread to think what you were doing upstairs!
Can we have a vote about not being rude to me?
Mrs. Slocumbe wanting facilites for her pussy, a comfy corner and a scratching post

I'm particularly fond of:
:lucas01: There was Rommel, knocking on the gates of El Alamein, and was Captain Peacock worried? Not a bit of it, he was winning, 20-12, in Cairo.

OK I found another part I smile at because Lucas seems to have a hard time keeping it together. When Lucas says "Going down to room fumf to play ze pong mit ze ping." and starts to crack up ... now that get's me chuckling.

And that's another time that Mollie Sugden tried to hold back from laughing out of character. I suppose one could argue Mrs. Slocombe was supposed to laugh at that joke, but Mollie played it like she was trying to keep from laughing.

I also think some of Rumbold's best scenes are from "Bliss Girl"; there are a lot of really funny seuqences in that episode that don't quite gel as a whole.
