Hey there
I happened upon this little article while looking through other AYBS related sites.
Basically the purpose for which I'm showing this link, is just to hear what you have to say about the article, in terms of its validity on Humphries sexuality and the evil descriptive words he says about Grace & Favour/AYBS: again. Hes nothing more than a Grace & Favour blasphemor.

Heres a good article with lots of stories about what would have been if Grace & Favour would have stayed on.

I think the writer of the first article is taking the show a bit too seriously.

I think so as well. It wasn't a documentary it was just a camp comedy that makes our tv light and gay for half an hour.

This series, known in Britain as GRACE & FAVOUR, was probably the worst thing to happen to British television since the Luftwaffe.
This is cold ....

And he obviously hasn't seen half of what's out there on British TV these days...or American TV for that matter.

Grace & Favour was terrific and I dont care what that guy says. For a reunion series it was good. If you've ever seen some reunion series, alot of them just plain suck.

Apropos of very little, there was a late-80s rock band in Detroit called "Anne Be Davis."

I think so too, but his basic point - that Mr Humphries being gay is a key to the series - is fair, I think. The writer almost seems to look at the series as a drama rather than a comedy, but I can understand what he's getting at.

In a way that article is quite harsh attacking what Mr Inman thought of his character. In fact I believe that the term 'still sitting on the fence then Mr Humphries' which Mr Lucas said implied that Mr Humphries did not know which side of the fence he was sitting on.
I personally think Mr Humphries was a 'Mummies boy'.

Boy, the author of that article really hated Grace and Favour, didn't he? Don't hold back, mister! That kind of unnecessarily angry writing always turns me off.
The articles I read and interviews with Inman that I've seen all feature him saying that he thought of and played Mr. Humphries as "a mother's boy" rather than a gay man. If that's how he saw the character, that's how he saw the character.

As for the articles, everyone's entitled to their opinion.
I love the last line in the second article:
"
When a fan asked what color Mr. Humphries preferred Mrs. Slocombe's hair, John Inman
came up with the best quote of the evening:
"I didn't mind what color Mrs. Slocombe's hair was, as long as it matched her pussy."

You're right, Joe. People are entitled to their opinions. But I get tired of super-angry people venting their anger all over the place. The guy who wrote the anti-Inman article was seething with rage. I wanted to say: "Glass of water for Mr. Grainger. Let the cold tap run."
While I was reading his article, I kept thinking "What would this guy do if someone really hurt him?" I mean, he's so angry over the sexual orientation of a fictional character on a TV show that ended 20-30 years ago. If he's so angry over that, what would he do if someone burgled his house or was mean to his child?
I love the internet and can't imagine life without it now. But, boy, there are a lot of angry, rage-filled people out there. Ranting is everywhere.
Oops, I think I just finished a rant. <g>

Eh, I think that great characters sometimes attain an "autonomy" of their own, apart from the control of the person who played them. The Humphries character is so well-known and well-developed that it's, in a sense, larger than Mr Inman and more complicated than the way he conceived of it.
I also think it's important to understand that Inman (and Croft and Lloyd) might not be telling the truth, or might be playing a subtle game, when they deny Humphries' sexuality. After all, the main comedic mechanism in AYBS and G&F was double entendre, which relies on the actor and writer essentially playing a dirty joke completely "straight". The humor is all in what is implied. Remember that David Croft also insists that when Mrs Slocombe talks about her "pussy", she's only referring to her cat, nothing more. And he's right, she is only referring to her cat. What makes it funny are the implications of what she's saying, and the fact that Mollie Sugden played the lines completely straight and completely innocently. Mr Humphries' character is the same, which is also how gay or bisexual men had to exist during the era the show was made. You communicated by innuendo.
All that said, to me, the Humphries character was absolutely and definitely a gay man, even if he never actually consummated his orientation with anyone. That's why it's funny.

Y'all have totally taken Jeddy out of context. He is the most vehement, rabid fan of AYBS? there is! I've looked at his website...a lot. The text articles are not his...they come from various sources. I know he takes issue with the attempted un-gaying of Mr. Humphries, with good cause, Jeddy is a gay man who is sick and tired of being sick and tired. There is good point made that Mr. Humphries was never free.
This guy is obsessed with the show, admitting to watching episode after episode and studying them. He has character descriptions which are bang-on. So there's my defense of this guy, who really loves the show.
On his website, Jeddy only has this to say of G&F:
"Explaining Grace and Favour and Are You Being Served? Again!
Grace and Favour was a sequel series to AYBS? which was produced and aired in the early 1990's. Are You Being Served? Again! is the name given to the show when it was imported and viewed on public television stations across the United States.
You might wonder why this site has no information/pictures/et cetera from Grace and Favour - the main reason is that I do not really recommend it. Admittedly, I've only read episode summaries, but still, it's a sequel to a show that had already been on the air for a very long time, and from what I do know about it it's basically a worn-out attempt at recapturing the past, even if it might have its funny moments here and there."
