I was watching Fifty Years On earlier today, and I can't get past how none of them knew her first name...even Mr. Rumbold her manager!
Also...Mrs. Slocombe tells Capt. Peacock to call her "Betty" in the pilot.
Its a mad world in AYBS? Land

Ha ha ha ya what about Rumbold not knowing. What a great manager and what fine records he must keep! You know he reminds me of somebody.... 8-)

This is one of my biggest complaints about "Fifty Years On". It was one of those cases of "pleading ignorance" for the sake of a story line.
Putting aside the inconsistency, I'd just say this - 40 years ago it was a lot more common to refer to people just by their surname and honorific. Even in the context of a workplace. It's one of those things that has changed. Similarly in my first office job people smoked at their desks... times change...

True, but come on. Rumbold shows up to the meeting and asks if anyone knows her name!

The man would have to know his employees name. He's an idiot but not that bad.

that is very confusing first we hear mr. mash announcing his name as James then we hear it is Dick from his own mouth in the episode "The Old Order Changes"

It was originally James but later changed to Dick for sake of a joke in "The Old Order Changes ".

Any other characters whom we dont know the first name of? What about Miss Bellfridge or any of YMG's girls?
Well let's give Mr Mash a name...
I'll suggest Larry as that's the name of the actor who plays him.
And Mickey might be good - Mickey Mash.
(I keep thinking Monster but that's just silly.)

We know that Miss Belfridge's first name begins with B, as she's mentioned as "Miss B. Belfridge" in the staff newspaper that Peacock reads. Or that could be her first name - Miss Bea Belfridge.
The secretary played by Louise Burton was called Virginia Edwards.

That's what I've always thought... when they don't give the name, use the actor's real first name. Larry works pretty well.
Miss Bakewell could easily be Penny. Any why not...
Milo Grossman
Benny Klein
Young Mr. Harold Grace
Candy Belfridge (except it doesn't fit with the "B" Belfridge)

Perhaps the reason Mr. Mash never revealed his first name is that his parents gave him a very posh, pretentious one. And Mr. Mash, being a proud member of the working class and shop steward, was too ashamed to mention it.
I suggest "Vyvyan." :D (Which, with that spelling, is [or was] a masculine name in England.)

St Cuthbert was a Roman Catholic Saint I don't know if he was also considered a CofE Saint or not. Some English Saints are one or the other, but many go either way.

In Dungeons & Dragons, one of the gods a character might choose to worship is Saint Cuthbert!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Cuthbert_(Dungeons_%26_Dragons)
He's a deity of "Common Sense, Wisdom, Zeal, Honesty, Truth, [and] Discipline." Sounds like a total mismatch with "our" Cuthbert, who's never been known to exemplify any of those qualities. :)

St. Wilgefortis
Feastday: (http://www.minki.net/saints/f_day/) July 20
Wilgefortis, also known as Liberata, Kummernis in Germany, in England as Uncumber, and in France (http://www.catholic.org/encyclopedia/view.php?id=4817) as Livrade, among other names, her story is a pious fiction more folktale than religious, according to which she was one of nine daughters of a pagan (http://www.catholic.org/encyclopedia/view.php?id=8888) Portuguese King. When her father wanted her to marry the King of Sicily, despite her vow of virginity, she prayed for help in resisting the marriage, whereupon she grew a beard and mustache and the suit was withdrawn. Her father was so furious he had her crucified. Father Charles Cahier, S.J., wrote, for my part, I am inclined to think that the crown, beard, gown and gown and cross which are regarded as the attributes of this marvelous maiden (in pictorial representations), are only a pious devotion to the famous crucifix of Lucca, somewhat gone astray. This famous crucifix was completely dressed and crowned, as were many others of the same period. In course of time, the long gown caused it to be thought that the figure was that of a woman, who on account of the beard was called Vierge-forte. We may add that the crucifix of Lucca (http://www.catholic.org/encyclopedia/view.php?id=7247) was shod with silver to prevent the wearing away of the wood by the kissing of the feet by pilgrims. This also has been turned to the glorification of St. Wilgefortis. For it is said that a poor minstrel playing an air before the saint's statue was rewarded by her giving him one of her precious shoes. St. Wilgefortis' feast day (http://www.catholic.org/saints/f_day/) is July 20.

For some reason I always think of Mrs Grainger as an Edna. Maybe to do with her dream of being Errol Flynn? It sounds a bit alike.
Mrs Diana Peacock seems alright.
