Time for some fun.
:D
We find out in AYBS? Again that Mr. S. slipped out for some slightly salted Sansbury's butter (say that ten times fast!) and never came back. But previously in "The Apartment" we learned that....the vice squad came for him at 4 in the morning or something. He also didn't have a proper job.
What kind of man was Mr. Slocombe? How do you see this guy who was married to our Betty? Looks, personality? Have some creative fun with this one.

Well we know her fondness for men and booze, she probably met him in a bar and took it from there !!! :lol2:

Can you imagine being married to her? Every evening she'd be sure to
say something about her "pussy" and a bloke wud be up all night!

Well we know what he looks like as he was shown in GAF - but I must say he looks nothing as I imagined. He was very smart and well spoken and together, I always imagined someone the total opposite. I think they must of got drunk one night and got married that way and he was forever trying to escape!! Poor Betty though I always felt sorry for her, I think she deserved someone nice to be with.

Maybe our Betty lied about him to cover up her hurt ?

In the episode 'The appartment' she said to Mr. Humphries:
'I only live alone, since Mr. Slocombe lives no longer with me.'
Humphries: 'Was it very sudden?'
Mrs Slocombe: ' Yes it was. At 8 AM the fraud sqoud (I don't think I spell this correctly) was there.'

I've always pictured Mr. Slocombe as a somewhat timid and shy man, probably on the short size and someone who liked his booze (not an alcoholic but someone who drank on a somewhat regular basis). I also seem him having a bit of a wandering eye. I don't know if this is an acurate picture or not, but I see him as a cross between Richard Bucket and Leroy Lockhorn (from the comic strip).

For some reason I always pictured him as an "Onslow" kinda guy...

That's it!! That was along the lines of what I was thinking, but I couldn't think of who. Perfect to a "T".

My guess is that they got married too quickly and neither one was prepared for the responsibility. Young Mrs. Slocumbe kept hanging out at the pub and Mr. Slocumbe was under-employed. He likely got tired of paying her bar tab. After getting arrested by the fraud squad (or whatever it was), he probably blamed her spending.
Then on the day she "spent all the housekeeping by Tuesday" at the pub, he walked out. Mrs. Slocumbe most likely attributed his leaving to the fraud case.
Both seemed to have done well afterwards. He obviously learned to manage his finances better. Mrs. Slocumbe didn't seem to hold a grudge against him -- only that she regretted he did better at the time of G&F.
It all seemed a very mutual split.

BTW -
I think if Mr. Slocumbe had learned that she was his estranged wife in that episode of G&F, I think he would have complimented her on doing so well.
They could have shaken hands, wished each other well, and went on their separate ways.
That would have been a very heart-warming resolution to the ending of that show.

I feel that Mr Slocombe would have been very ashamed of leaving his wife and would have pretended not to know her. Going to Sainsbury's for some slightly salted butter is not a very original excuse.

Many divorced people speak badly of their exes . Sometimes only to hide their own offenses. The Fraud Squad and the butter at Sainsbury's both sound plauseable, but who knows? I remember Mrs Slocombe saying she had spent the Housekeeping by Tuesday.
