Grace and Favour didn't last long enough for the BBC to get creative with guest appearances on the show. In the US, especially old NBC Must-See-TV, stars from one show would show up in character on other NBC shows.

Just for grins, what characters from the world of TV would have made the most interesting guests to Millstone Manor for the staff to tend to?

***For this discussion, Mr. Lucas or any other AYBS? character is banned. We would all like to have seen Mr. Lucas, Mash, or Harman, etc. for a cameo.

Personally, I would have liked to have seen John Cleese as Basil Faulty for a stay at MM on vacation from Faulty Towers. I could see him being a royal pain of a guest and constantly complaining about the service and how FT was better. Comedy gold! Mrs. Slocumbe and Basil Faulty would have had a classic verbal skirmish!

I think Hyacinth & Richard Bucket from Keeping Up Appearances should have gone to Millstone Manor for a weekend in the country.

Maybe Benny Hill a.k.a. Fred Scuttle , Mr. Rumbold's A.D.D. brother, could drop in for an episode....

Or, a group from the Eight Star Company taking an executive retreat.

With Mr. Humphries and Ms. Warner always saying "don't you look familiar?"

Basil Fawlty would book a room to try talk Manuel ,who signs on at the manor as a waiter, into coming back to Fawlty Towers.

Having a tour bus from Dibley breaking down a mile from Milestone Manor and the staff having to put up the Vicar, David, Hugo, Alice, Frank, Owen and Jim for a few days while the bus was fixed.

Having Humphries get excited when he hears that "The Vicar" is here only to find out it's Geraldine.

I like Sonosun's idea:
Basil Fawlty would book a room to try talk Manuel ,who signs on at the manor as a waiter, into coming back to Fawlty Towers.

Manuel working at Millstone Manor. I can picture his first day…
<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
In the kitchen at Millstone Manor, Mavis and Manuel prepare lunch.
Mavis: “So Manuel, where will you be bunkin’ up tonight?”
Manuel: “?Que? …Bunkin?”
Mavis: “Yes, bunkin’. Sleep. Where you gonna sleep?”
Manuel: “Generalissimo Peacock say, ‘Manuel sleep in barn.”
Mavis: “In the barn?”
Manuel: “Si! In Barn.”
Mavis: “No, we can’t go havin’ you sleeping in the barn!” (Mavis thinks.) “I know, why don’t you sleep in my bed.”
Manuel: (Drops a tea cup) “Sleep Mavis bed?!”
Mavis: “Why sure! Me and Mr. Humphries can squeeze you in.”
Manuel: (Drops another cup) “Mr. Humphries!”
Mavis: “Oh don’t worry about Mr. Humphries, he’s no problem at all. You can come in and squeeze next to me. But you might want to let Mr. Humphries know first.”
Manuel: “Si! I tell Humphries.” (Mavis leaves the kitchen. Mrs. Slocumbe walks in and grabs a cup of tea. Manuel grins and daydreams at the prospect of sharing Mavis’ bed.)
Slocumbe: “Good Morning, Manuel. How are things going for you.”
Manuel: (Very excited) “I sleep with Mavis!” (Mrs. Slocumbe does a spit take.)
Slocumbe: “Does anyone know about this?!”
Manuel: “No one know. I tell Humphries.” (Mrs. Slocumbe dashes out to spread the gossip to Capt. Peacock, Rumbold, & Miss Brahms. Mr. Humphries enters through the outer door.)
Humphries: “Hello Manuel. Have you seen Mavis anywhere?”
Manuel: “Mavis no here. Mavis say tonight I sleep with you.” (Mr. Humphries puts one hand on his forehead, one over his heart and feints. Manuel, thinking he’s had a sudden heart attack, catches Mr. Humphries, eases him to the floor and begins mouth-to-mouth CPR. Just having heard the gossip, Mrs. Slocumbe, Capt. Peacock, Rumbold, and Miss Brahms rush into the kitchen.)
Peacock: (Seeing Manuel with a lip lock on Humphries) “What is the meaning of this!”
Manuel: “I must save Senior Humphries!” (he exclaims then resumes the CPR.)
Slocumbe: “You won’t save him that way!”
Brahms: (Confused) “That’s not how the Vicar does it.”
Peacock: “This sort of thing is not proper behavior between staff at our firm!”
Brahms: “I remember Mr. Rumbold telling you and Miss Hearst of Novelty Candles the same thing in the broom closet 20 years ago!”
Rumbold: “And if memory serves, those words had as little effect back then as they do now!” (Manuel continues the CPR.)
Humphries: (Having just revived) “Affectionate things these Spaniards!” (and faints again.)

I imagine John C. Holmes would have created quite a stir. Miss Brahms and Mrs. Slocombe would both want him, but would he go for Miss Lovelock instead? And then Mr. Humphries. He'd probably have to lie down most of the show. What about Captain Peacock? All of a sudden, he's not looking so manly anymore....

 ROTFL As usual, Mr. Rumbold probably wouldn't know what was going on. Upon hearing John Holmes was in the movies he would misunderstand and try to recruit him to organize a short film about the manor house involving the locals.

Moira Foot as an older and wiser (but still lovely) Miss Thorpe. Long after her short stint at Grace Brothers, she's become tired of city life and its strange men following her off the trains. Disillusioned as well by the commercial failure of her proposed filing system, she takes a holiday to Millstone Manor.

Mr. Moulterd is immediately smitten by her tall, strapping charms, and Miss Thorpe is charmed by him as well - after all, he's very unlike any other man she's ever met. They become an item, and naturally Mrs. Slocombe becomes jealous of them.

In the intervening years, both Peacock and Rumbold have forgotten about her. It's only after Miss Thorpe gives a demonstration of her "strap hanging" that Rumbold remembers her. Peacock, of course, gazes at her goggle-eyed (because he never saw the original strap-hanging in Rumbold's office) - and now Moulterd, Peacock and Slocombe are all in a dither over this attractive visitor!

This was a Britcom. I don't know how long it ran, because I only ever saw adverts and snipits. One thing I remember is that the guy had a wife in the Present, and a wife in the Past, around WW2. He once tried to tip off those in the past about an impending German attack, but no one believed him.
