The lady tells us at the beginning of each eppy, whats for sale on the ground floor and the first floor. What I don't know is how many floors are there? where is hardware? where is bathroom fittings? Why is the store manager's office the size of a broom closet? What do we really know about the store?

Well we know that the Bargin Basement is in the basement.

The Ladies and Gents Readymades is on the 1st floor (In the early eppys) and then moved to the 4th floor and God only knows where after that.

We assume that the restaurant is on the top floor.

Here's the song lyrics courtesy of Minki's Are You Being Served? Forever ...

Ground floor: perfumery
stationery and leather goods
wigs and haberdashery
kitchenware and food. Going up!

First floor: telephones
gents ready-made suits
shirts, socks, ties, hats
underwear and shoes. Going up!

Second floor: carpets
travel goods and bedding
material, soft furnishings,
restaurant and teas. Going down!

What do we really know about the store?

That when you get on a floor, you leave the elevator and descend down a set of stairs to get to the floor proper.

That the Boardroom has a wheelbarrow and an empty drinks cabinet.

That there is a ledge outside of the building so you can creep around to Rumbold's office to spy on him.

And that the staff club is located in the basement :)

In German Week (I just watched it this morning :D) they are on the 3rd floor. ..Mr. Rumbold calls Mr. Grace and Mr Grace says something like.. We used to have a Rumbold on the 3rd floor in the men and ladies department... to which Mr. Rumbold replies... I am Rumbold of the 3rd floor men and ladies.. or something like that.. :D

What I don't know is how many floors are there?

I don't think anyone knows how many floors there are in the store. At times the floor indicator above the lift doors showed only 3 floors, I believe, yet we know there were more. We saw a picture of the building in the epsiode, "The Sweet Smell of Success": when Captain Peacock was looking at Miss Belfridge's bikini picture in the store magazine, you can see the front cover, and the building on the cover has several floors. I also don't think the lyrics of the theme song jive with the location of the various departments, especially when their location seemed to change throughout the series.

the restaurant should be the top floor, but mrs slocombes appartment is the top floor. what about the club (room 5a) or the accountants dept, they are below ground - maybe a lower basement?

Also, in up captain peacock when they are waiting to award him with the badge, we see the lift dial only goes up to five.

I'm learning alot.
firstly I dont recall having heard the third verse of the opening credits jingle before.
And I never considered how asinine it is to climb steps to get to a lift.

:worship: All I can say is I bow to your excellence Red Shadow - I have watched the episode "The Sweet Smell of Success" at least 100 times and never noticed the building on the cover. I realize now that I have a lot of things I still could pick up on. :worship:

Here is the picture that RS is talking about. I think I counted 8 floors on the magazine cover. The picture is a little crappy because of blowing it up so much so I apologize.

Thanks Greg for the Pix.........Looks at least 10 stories to my untrained eye.

Also...we learn in the episode "Camping In" that at that time there is a water bed on the 4th floor - probably means bedding (not Reading) is there.

You're going to make me blush!! I can't tell if the building we see on the magazine cover is a photo of a real building or just a drawing. If it is a real building, I've always wondered exactly what building it is. Not that there aren't a few buildings sitting around London, just waiting to be photographed....

Interesting. Lets see (I could be wrong):

Mr. Grace offers apartments on the top floor over the Indian carry out.

Mr. Grace offers them a club in the sub basement.

Capt Peacock is called "up to accounts"

Doesn't Mrs. Slocombe go "up" to get her hair done

More later, I hope. EG

We do know that Haberdashery was located below the Ladies and Gentleman's Deparment. In "The Hand of Fate," when the Japanese customer gets tangled up with the buckets and falls down the stairs, Mr. Grainger mentions that "he'll be in Haberdashery by now."

We also know that the Radio Department was located below the Ladies and Gentleman's Department from the episode, "Gambling Fever." In that episode, Mr. Humphries offers to "pop down" to the Radio Department to listen to the race and then relay the action to the rest of the staff via the security camera.

In "Roots" Rumbold mentions the Ladies and Gents on the first floor then in "Sweet Smell" they are back on the 3rd floor.

i would think the canteen would be next to the restaurant on top floor, that way they would use the same kitchens...

What Floor is the Canteen on?

Last night I watched "The Sweet Smell of Success"

Mr. Harmon said he was turning on the elevators and going to test them by riding "down" to the canteen.

Shortly after that Miss Belfridge says that there is a man outside the window and "their on the 4th floor".

Freddy, if your drawing up a floor plan, I hope you have a big eraser

Have Fun: EG :graingerhead:

Bear in mind there could be a goods lift that does access all the floors and the regular lift was just for public floors.

Greg wrote We assume that the restaurant is on the top floor.

Then he wrote out the lyrics of the theme song . Some of which state

Second floor Carpets travel goods and bedding .... Restaurant and teas.

C'mon which is it ?

here's my theory:

The title song refers to the earlier grace Bros. store that Mr grace (as told in take over) burned down to claim the insurance money from in 1926. :)

hows that scan? :D

The top floor also had 3 fully functional apartments on it, as mentioned in Friends & Neighbors when the staff need to stay in them to avoid the rising cost of transport or the transport strike or whatever it was that forced them up there. I also think the boardroom and Mr. Graces office are on the top floor.

Plus, even though the theme song says the restaurant is on the 2nd floor...don't the staff say in later series eppies stuff about popping up for a cup of tea...when they are later in the series on the 3rd or 4th floor? Unless there is another restuarant in the store besides the canteen or that is some british lingo I don't know. Also...the picture on the magazine front doesn't match the interior...if the store is that big, why is there comparatively little floorspace in the ladies and gents departments if we are taking that to be one floor? Unless the store is not detached like Miss Brahms house.

Frankly, the store reminds me of that painting will all the stairs going all over the place leading in different directions but also in the end leading no where...anyone know the one I am talking about?

I would agree with that, and I would like to add that I think there are multiple departments/offices on each floor, hence why the building can be large and have little floor space. I also think that as the actual department is on the 3rd floor(which Rumbold is in charge of), Rumbold's office might be a floor up with other offices, hence being on the 4th floor.
