I was wondering today why everyone considered her frumpy on this show, she was in her 40s at this time and working on a farm. Did everyone expect her to dress up as though she was on Dynasty. Also I prefered her as a light blonde, or blonde, not with gray hair.

I think they purposely made her hair grey so she would fit in with the rest of the cast as an older person.

I never understood in the first season, why Miss Brahms and Slocombe wore their dress shoes to go out in the barn yard ????

I agree totally, That was kinda of head scratching wasn't it.

why Miss Brahms and Slocombe wore their dress shoes
The dress shoes were part of their normal attire. They wore them to work at Grace Brothers after all.

It jus drove me bonkers because she was still a very beautiful woman and they made her out to be like an Ethel Mertz.

Well if the Miss Brahms from Millstone Manor asked me out to dinner today... I'd jump at it. I think she was and still is today a very beautiful woman !!!!

I thought that odd as well, seeing as how Mrs. Slocombe(Mollie Sugden) was 50 when AYBS started, 70 for AYBSA(GaF).....Must have been poetic license to make Ms. Brahms appear older in order to fit in with the retirees, seeing how she was so much younger than the rest(almost 20 years younger)

let's face it she was closer in age to Mavis and Lovelock, but they made her look almost as old as Mrs. Sloxombe who was 25 years older than her.

Miss Brahms must have done something right. After all, she was in her 40's and was able to retire while she was still young. I'll probably work until I drop . . . oops, I just dropped.

By my calculations, Miss Brahms (the character not the poster) would have been middle forties, during the series. To me, she looks like a woman in her middle forties. I can't honestly say I ever watch the episodes and think, "Bit frumpy, there, Wendy ..."
As to the dress shoes thing - for me, it was perfect for both characters. They'd come to a country manor hotel, expecting a pleasant evening of fine dining (cue the takeaway tandoori and chips). Mrs Slocombe's experience as a land-girl was a long time back. I'm pretty sure neither character would have thought to pack a pair of good stout lace-ups, let alone some wellies.
The only question mark in my mind was the premise. Pensions pay out according to the length of time you pay into them (in theory), so the whole 'equal partners' thing made no sense. And of course, only Captain Peacock and Mrs Slocombe were of retirement age. These nits, naturally, I will readily discard, given that they gave us two seasons worth of "Grace and Favour"!

Writers do have license to fit the things they want into the plot. Which makes the characters all being retired at various ages perfectly fine.

Oh, no argument here, sonosun. And frankly, if any producer wants to put John Inman et al on another stage for me, I'll buy whatever they're selling!
It's an unfortunate facet of my nature that I think things through too much; which is where the nit-picking comes in. I'd have preferred to have the small discrepancies explained away, as is usually possible with a line or so of dialogue. As it is, I fill in the blanks as I watch. In my head. Zircon's head is a swirly and frenetic place to be!

Ah yes, the penny drops ... apologies to sonosun.
As for the packing department -- well, they can try to debag me if they like ... but they'll have quite a trip. I'm nowhere near London and the store, I'm in Great Tender, way off in the West Country. And I am armed with buns!

I think she actually fit in. Being the youngest on the set and on the show must not have been easy. And as we know they were a close knit group. I would have killed to be on that show.

I didn't get that either Miss Brahms.... I think it cheapened the whole "Brahms" character. We knew she was feisty and a bit of a flirt but she always appeared to be somewhat wholesome in AYBS?. I thought that was a very bad idea with the married man myself....

We've all been in love and no matter what we really were in love. No matter the circumstances. We really can't judge especially since the writers didn't really get into it on the show.

I do , I live in Seattle and we have a PBS station that runs it on Tuesday and Thursday nites and repeats those on Saturday afternoon. I love Wendy on EE her character is hard as nails but loves her family and friends. Some people consider Pauline (Wendy's character) to be a grumpy old person, but I think her character has had a hard life.

Personally, I could care less how old she was, what she wore, or what colour her hair was. She was still an awesome actress with great talent. Her character was still as funny as ever, and the show would not have been the same without her. :D

I also loved how Wendy could say her line so cooly as if she were saying it without a script. Her endless wit helped make the show go on as long as it did. Well, the others actors helped out a little too.

When I watched my first episode Wendy was my favorite from the first scene I saw her in. It was just something about the way she delivered her lines that just cracked me up. The same is said for Lucas as well.

But one of my favourites was when she would tell off Miss.Lovelock. She had a talent for telling people off, and I'm glad she didn't lose it.

I do not know if anyone else has noticed this but on one episode Mrs. Slocombe conments on Miss Brahms cooking, Brahms starts crying and Captain Peacock says "your doing very well Miss Brahms" in which she replies Thank You Captain Peacock" Do you guys think they were at Gace Brothers a bit too long.

I love the facts that she is now able to insult her former seniors. in the first episode they were talking of the second war and she commend on how Peacock wa a dessert rat. I am glad to see she has lost none of her former attitude. :D
