The one thing that was always disappointing about G&F was the poor job they did with explaining away the years between AYBS? and G&F when it came to spouses and others.

It was easy to overlook Mr. Humphries and Mrs. Slocumbe's relationship history as they were unattached at the end of AYBS? and G&F's storylines gave them comedic romantic obstacles with Mavis and Mr. Moulterd. And the episode with Mr. Slocumbe provided good material.

But the fate of Mrs. Peacock was never mentioned at all during G&F. With their turbulent relationship during AYBS?, some explanation or at least a mention was warranted. I wondered about Mrs. Peacock each time Peacock flirted with Jessica Lovelock. Was he a widower? Was he divorced? Either answer would have worked and made his flirting with Jessicaless puzzling. Or were they estranged and she still lived in London?

Mrs. Rumbold ran off with Mr. Prentice - a development that seemed out of place since they was no prior AYBS? marriage troubles between Rumbold and his wife (except for Friends & Neighbors). Why mention that relationship failure when the mention wasn't funny or didn't add anything to the G&F storyline?

And was anyone else really disappointed with Miss Brahms only long relationship was being 'the other woman'? Couldn't they have at least written her a backstory about having a long relationship with a fiancee that ended before they got married or something? She deserved more.

At least Mrs. Moulterd got to run off with the blacksmith - and she was happy! :D That was at least amusing to the story.

Sometimes leaving out the facts adds to the imagination, but in these cases it didn't.

Does anyone have better backstory ideas of your own for the lost spouses?

Yes I was and couldn't agree more. All through the years of AYBS? you knew Miss Brahms was a streetwise girl but a "good" girl. Now in GAF they make it out that the only relationship she had in all those years was one of adultry which IMO soils the image of the dear girl.

My thoughts exactly. Miss Brahms' character changed quite a bit over the years, though. In early AYBS, she was a sweet but sexy young woman who knew how to get a man wrapped around her finger. Then she changed into more of an airhead in the middle and later years of AYBS. In G&F, she's definitely grown up and seems a bit more bitter toward the world and more willing to dish-out insults. From the early days of AYBS, I always expected her to eventually find a handsome husband and to have plenty of children. I didn't expect her to end-up in an adultress relationship.

I agree with all of that too. I just wish that Miss. Brahms had a relationship with a nice handsome man in her life.

She's absolutely beautiful! :)

I would have loved to see Shirley happily married with kids.

I think that could have set up many a situations. Slocombe jealous that Shirley was happy and finally had a man. The kids running around driving everyone crazy. The further fights between Shirley and Lovecock er... Lovelock when Lovelock is hitting on Shirley dishy husband.
