Out of the original cast, most of the actors reprised their roles for the new series. Mike Berry, who played Mr Spooner, chose not to return, but other cast members saw the chance for another television series as lucrative

I wished they would have said why Mike Berry chose not to return !!!!

Wendy Richard, already successful as Pauline Fowler on EastEnders, wished to gain publicity by starring in two programmes simultaneously, and agreed to play Miss Brahms once more.

They make it sound like that is the only reason Wendy did GAF.

Thank you for the link Tids !!!

I am very greatful he made that decision. I cannot, in my wildest imagination, fathom how Spooner's character would have done anything to advance the plot.

Especially since he never did anything in that regard in the first place (AYBS?).

I agree with tids and maurice. I can't even begin to imagine Mike Berry in G&F. I might not even have ever watched it.

It would have been nice to have Mr. Harman, also. Arthur English was still alive then. Maybe he was too ill to participate. :?

Not sure where Harman could have fit in, really. We already have Moulterd to represent the lower classes. It may have been overkill. I do think Arthur had many problems at this time, and was battling alcohol again. In 1986, he was suffering from emphazema. By 1987, it appears he wasn't able to work at all. In 1995, he died.

I read in wendy's book that they called her up and asked her to participate and she said yes. she said that she was not only looking forward to working with the cast again but at the time it was a welcome change from Pauline Fowler and EE.

That would have been excellent if Mike Berry could have rejoined the cast for this show. However, he didn't and that's that. I always felt like there was a gap missing, where a younger man should have fit in. However, probably 97% of the people here probably disagree. But more power to me, Or should that be you?

Just go over to the "Episodes I'd like to have seen" thread and tell us all about what
you would have liked.

Yeah...I'd like to see how Spooner would have fit in at Millstone. He'd be as extraneous to me there as he was on AYBS? Just a smart-ass with a bad 'tude. 8)

And that's what makes a good show, in my opinion. Having characters that you love, like, tolerate, and just plain hate. I for one can not stand Captain Peacock, and I had to put up with him for all 10 seasons of Aybs? and AybsA! But having these hateful characters adds controversy and makes it more interesting. If I loved all the characters on that show, man would it be boring!

You'd end up with one of these: an emaciated "Friends", "Ozzie and Harriet" (O & H Nelson for you youngsters) gone bad or Teletubbies!

That's interesting. I never knew that Mr. Spooner was asked to be a part of GaF.

Here are my "What if" possibilities....

Maybe he could've pursued Mavis throughout the series and she would constantly shoot him down in favor of Mr. Humphries.

Perhaps he'd put his singing skills on display to attract guests at the manor so they could finally have some customers!

Maybe he'd finally "grow a spine" and not be so daft or whiney, but couldn't resist the manipulative attitude of Miss Lovelock. She would have him wrapped around her finger and he'd do anything for her at a moment's notice, which could upset Mrs. Slocombe and Miss Brahms. He'd be her lackey, if you will.

Ah, the possibilities....

Another good reason to constantly pit Spooner and Peacock against each other.
