There were plenty of funny jokes, memorable characters, and witty lines in the show. But were there jokes, lines, characters, scenes, etc. that just didn't work? Maybe times where you said to yourself, "well that was stupid"? One of my least favorite characters was the monkey in the episode, "Monkey Business." It was too weird and just not funny at all, IMO.

Peacock and his stupid "side effects" of that throat spray. That whole scene was stupid.

I can't remember what eppy, but Mr. Rumbold's line was supposed to be a funny one but it was as if no one caught on. He says, "I may be dense, ..." .. and he waited for everyone to laugh, but it never happened. :D

I think that was in "His and Hers".

Yes, GWW. I had forgotten about that scene. Oh, it was painful to watch!

The whole scene from "The Agent" where the pay packets come down and Peacock had to put that pair of knickers on his head and a bra over his eye. The audience didn't seem to like it either.

Conduct Unbecoming. The whole trial was annoying. Most especially the part when Peacock was on the stand - the late entries in the book, etc. It was long winded and got carried away and wasn't dealing with Mr. Humphries's issue at all.... etc. yawn.

This is Your Store, Mr. Grace.. Mr Lucas with the bucky teeth and everyone reminising about how they first met Mr. Grace........

that was painful

Honestly....I thought that was funny...

for me, it had to be the whole onion under the arm bit of soap thing, or whatever it was....that was just a "what the??" moment

Virtually anything in "Hand of Fate", but especially the whole "...with that Chinaman." "He was Japanese." "Same thing." exchange.

Yeh, I agree with you, Melchett. What was that all about?

The one part I really go "Owwwww" to is when Brahms tells Humphries that "he was in the mood when he was holding that chinaman's hand". Right there you have a double zinger. One about Humphries being gay and another about not being able to identify the difference between two races.
But like an idoit, I still chuckle.

In Happy Returns (during the Dance of the Toys), Captain Peacock is given a broom to ride as a substitute for a hobby horse. He mounts it with the broom head on the floor and Mr H tells him to turn it the other way up.

Later on, Mr Rumbold complains that when he sits down his egg rides up and he cannot see so Mr H breaks part of the costume stating "you are hard boiled aren't you" (by the way it's obvious that the costume was built with a break-away section under the face hole).

Later still you have the whole ramble between Mr Lucas and Mr H about how the egg was awake to play the piano.

The entire Roots? blackface routine, just insensitive.

This was obviously "Humphries Filler" to give him more talking time. This is when the show was handed over to him and was no longer an "ensemble" comedy. This is the one main reason I don't like the latter series.

In Anything You Can Do...

The whole "joke" about cooking requires very little intelligence, otherwise women wouldn't be able to do it....

The joke pretty much falls flat and the audience doesn't know whether to laugh awkwardly or boo.

Another joke that the audience didn't laugh at occurs in "His and Hers." When Mr. Grainger states something about there's no doubt others have seen the way the His and Hers girl operates, Mr. Lucas says, "I felt it," but no one laughs. It seems like he might have said it a bit too late or that possibly Mr. Grainger said his next line too early, so that might have contributed to the lack of response from the audience.

I have always disliked when Peacock rips the wallpaper in 'The Club'

And the terrible phony looking souffle in 'Take Over'....ugh.

Since the show came out in the 70s, some things weren't considered racist back then that are now. I think it was the episode where the Japanese were thinking of buying the store. They called them "Japs" the entire time, and the Japanese guy at the end talking in an accent I've never heard a Japanese person use was just too much for me.
