This is the type of thing that grows on you. No, not like a fungus....
When I first saw the movie, I didn't really like it. I felt the jokes were re-hashed and the mood was strange because of no audience laughter. But after getting it on DVD, I watched it a few times since (like 100) and really began to enjoy it. Yes it has some jokes done on the telly show but it holds it own with new stuff. The "Chattering Teeth" scene gets me laughing as does Mrs. Slocombe being stalked by the nurse.

It was repeats but different...
Cheap and quickly made...To a different plot...
But it is still "ARE YOU BEING SERVED?"
It's not great but, Good and Different.{Worth watiching every 16-18 months}.
Lucas :D
I wish that they would have put more Into the writing...
Very Young Mr Grace

The ending was strange with Young Mr. Grace popping out of the tank, but bits and pieces of the show were outstanding.
Who could forget the "chattering teeth" in the underwear? I can't believe that joke never made it into the original show. Or maybe the BBC wouldn't let it, who knows?

My overall thoughts:
~Many reused lines, jokes, ideas.
~It was weird not hearing the audience laugh along.
~The photo machine sequence was hilarious!
~It seemed cheaply made to me.
Altogether, it had the great staff team along with some new funny characters, so I thought it was excellent!

I've only seen it once about 9 years ago and that was enough for me. It looks like the movie was made on a lower budget than the TV series. Most of the cast looked like they were bored stiff by the whole thing.
The few funny moments that I can remember revolved around Mr. Grainger. I think there was a scene on the airplane where Mr. Grainger is looking for the lavoratory and his ends up in the cockpit. Then another scene where the staff discover that lock on the bathroom is on the outside, so they should sing a song to let everyone know that there is someone in there. Mr. Grainger says that he's had a large dinner so he better learn a long song. And I remember that Mr. Humphries was very gay (well more gay then usual).
And that's really all I remember about the movie.

I like that you also get to see the hair salon section of Grace Brothers. There is some funny material from YMG and Mr.Humphries.

Almost everyone I know either loves or hates it: there's very few that are neither one way nor the other about it.
I personally like it. Yes, there was a bit of redundancy in there, but then again, that's most AYBS episodes for you :D It was nice to see them get outside of the store for a change.

One of my favorite scenes is the Grainger/Cockpit one !!! :lol2:
I read an interview from John Inman saying they had fun doing the movie but the lack of audience threw their timing off with the jokes. He said timing was everything in comedy. I kinda agree....

An interesting fact: In the film, the staff are on a different floor than the 3 or 4 that they are usually on in the store. I don't know which floor it is, but they are on it.

I was "somewhere in between" but there was no choice for that, so I said I liked it. I surely don't hate it!! I think it could have been better in that it was basically a re-hash of AYBS? eps all strung together. It could have been more fun with a better plot. But, it is what it is!

Well, you either like it or you don't... if you sit and watch it, you must like it or you wouldn't have spent 90 minutes of your life looking at it.
If you bought it and it's still in the shrink wrap, you obviously don't like.... you daft boy you !!!!
Are you telling me you're more like, as Humphries would say... "Not one way or the other ????"

I love the film I've seen it more times than any episode, as for years in the UK that is all we had AYBS? wise. It is a bit annoying rejiggling the TV scripts but I can forgive it as it's still funny. Its nice seeing the sets shot and lit differently. And Mr Humphries' pink outfit and hat is just classic! And Mr Grainger's "posh basket" reference is great! It's just a hell of a lot of fun to watch with the penty houses and the singing in the lav - love it all! VERY Seventies in it's style and it's reason for being (decline in the British film industry) and it's look at foreign package holidays which was still a new thing at the time. So it's all very nostalgic and historical!! Oh no I think I might have to go watch it again!

Not to me it isn't. It's not that great. It's just a re-hash, on film, of some AYBS? eps. It's fun to see them on screen, but you aren't missing much, IMO. I leant my copy out to some pals of my mom....and I don't care if it get it back, really.
