View Full Version : Who on the staff is a complete basket ?????

Capt. Peacock was never one of my favorite characters. He's the power hungry fascist that I've grown to hate over the years yet I realize for our favourite show, he's a necessary evil.
What are some of you favourite "Peacock being a complete basket" scenes ??

The whole of "Conduct Unbecoming" Peacock was a basket (bastard) to Humphries. He treated Humphries like a thrid class citizen after Humphries helped get his arse out of many jams.

MMMMM____Up Captain Peacock...The key and Lunch Room and with Old Ernest...
Bliss Girl...About all...

And let's don't forget German Week...Air of Authority...and Dance...

Peacock was a complete jerk to Slocombe in "Mrs. Slocombe Senior Person" just because she was getting a temp job in Rumbold's office. There was no need for that and Humphries is the only one that had a set of gonads to tell Peacock about it.

Awwww...a Peacock bashing thread. That makes me sad. Anywho....Peacock's character added balance to the show. Without him it'd be too nice and too easy. That military gruffness was needed to keep everyone in line. His womanizing, being a married man, was the only thing I found really baskety about him. The rest I rather found exciting and intriguing.

The key idea that really ticked me about Captain Peacock was when he would pick on one character imparticular. For instance, in "Coffee Morning", he only picked on Mr.Grainger, and none of the others. I found that unfair and simply cruel. However as mentioned above, it does add balance to the show and make it more versatile.

Mrs. Slocombe commented "Capt. Peacock, I do not respond to any man's finger!" :o
Peacock and Mr. Mash used to bicker at each other. Of course, Mr. Mash is not allowed on the floor during opening hours. Every once in a while, however, he did appear and it drove Peacock crazy. LOL

Lucas states "This is justice, he's been rotten to me ever since I got here".
I think that's in the epi with Captain Peacocks boil. (the Hero?)
In conduct unbecoming he relentlessly berates Mr. Spooner into admitting
his (mr. Spooners) lack of credibility all the while ignoring the fact that
he did in fact falsify his sign-in time.
In another episode, his umbrella hooks with Mr. Rumbolds and it pulls apart.
Peacock notices the display of umbrellas in the gents dept and quietly
TRADES umbrellas.
He is the epitomy of an authoritarian aristocrat (even though he isn't one, he sure acts the part).
He wants others to act in a manner he approves of yet he himself eschews
the behavior. a hypocrite.
I can't understand why I like him

This show of "basketness" drives me. How he and then later on , the rest of the staff turn on poor Grainger.
From "Heir Apparent" when Peacock finds out that Humphries isn't OMG heir, he has that "I'd like to knock it off with a sledgehammer" look on his face as he say's "You're relived OMG? I am too". Like Humphries would have made Peacocks life Hell if Humphries was in charge. Mrs. Humphries was wrong, Peacock is a toffee nosed git !!!!

I think the Peacock character is taken waaaay too seriously. You have to see him as a baffoon. There's an obnoxious character in every sit com...and they ALL get their "comeuppance." (Frank Burns, Ted Baxter..etc. ) Peacock has had his, for sure.

It's not that I'm taking him too seriously, it's just a thread I thought of. I know that Peacock is the quintessenial "EVIL" for the show. I just thought it would be fun to list some of the times he's angered people by being the jerk he is.

Oh I agree entirely! Not to get too off topic here, but did anybody else notice how the management become less strict as the seasons pass? I mean don't get me wrong, they're still unpleasant at times. But in older episodes, Lucas would get flamed if he walked out of his territory. Handkerchiefs had to be fluted to a right measurement, and so on. Yet in the later series, the gents were always at the ladies' counter, etc.

Dear Greg
Being late by a few seconds...
MMMMMMM_______I can see that you have never been in sales...
That early Monday morning meeting...At 8 am. the Sales Manager "LOCKED" the door to the conference room...
1. The first time you are late...They will real nicely tell you about it.
2. The next time you go get donuts for the crew...{you buy}...
3. The third time it's either donuts...???...or out the door...{Their Choice}...
If there is a major problem...You had better call in very early...
And if you call in for every big sales meeting ...Bye ! Bye !

~But sometimes my manager reminds me of Captain Peacock. She can be kind of snotty like she runs the world, but then can have a real warm heart sometimes too. I guess like her, I tend to overlook the good qualities of poor Captain Peacock. My Apologies Old Floorwalker!

Of course, you need a person to hate. If you loved and agreed with everybody on the show, then it wouldn't seem realistic at all. When I go to school, to work, to family gatherings, there's ALWAYS going to be one or two people of whom I can't stand. It's life, and that's what writers want their shows to reflect. Wow, that sounded too good coming from me.

Excellent Idea!
A star example that enters my mind is in "Coffee Morning" when the whole staff turn on Grainger. When he refuses to sign the book, the others could have jumped up and also refused, or at least back poor Mr.Grainger. But instead, they chose to just stand there silently like they didn't back him up at all!

Sometimes Mrs.Slocombe can seem like such a witch to poor Miss.Brahms. A few of my key examples are:
~Calling her a "selfish cow".
~Taking back some commission on that fur coat.
~Making her remove the executive frills.
~Going bananas over the "jumbo juno range" bra.
~Referring to her as common now and again.
There are several more, but I'll leave it at that for now.
