In "Takeover", the staff is told there will be a takeover from Lally and Willits, to which Captain Peacock says, "that's a Bristol firm I believe." Mrs. Slocombe responds, "Never mind where they hang out..." which gets a huge laugh. Why is this funny?

I know that Bristol = breast, but still don't get what she is saying. Any thoughts?

I've always wondered about that line, too!

This topic has been discussed here: http://www.minki.net/aybsforum/showthread.php?t=1186&highlight=bristol

And the "search" feature also seem to indicate some discussion in the "Wibster Wonders" thread and also in Brit language threads and a few more. You can look into those and/or just do a "search" for "Bristol".

i asked a few friends what they thought about this, to get some more opinions on it, and here is basically what they said...

'it's more the sarcasm of how she's saying it. they think their jobs are over, so when the firm is mentioned, mrs slocombe bascially doesn't care where the firm is located, she is more interested in a way of getting to the point of the discussion.'

i dont know if this helps at all, but obviously people interpret things in different ways. i have to say that my friends opinion of it is pretty much what i think as well. it seems logical enough, but not everyone might see it in the same way.

True--when I hear Bristol jokes, I think of breasts. But then again, that's the result of too many years of Benny Hill jokes :D

Benny Hill warped minds of many a generations.
This is true. My dad used to watch Benny Hill and I was sneak out of bed and sit in the hallway and watch it too. I did that for quite a while until one time I laughed out loud and got caught. Then it was much harder to do but I was able to pull it off quite a few more times. :D

It's still pretty sexist, but by today's standards Benny Hill is actually pretty tame... :)

TV shows like AYBS? and Benny Hill are a testiment to their time. The 70's were just that, sexist. A flurry of T and A all over the tellie.
