View Full Version : Microwave?

In the first episode, Mavis tells the staff that she heated the tandori (sp?) up in the
Microwave....Anyone ever see a microwave in the kitchen?

Seems a little out of place, almost anachronistic, in a manor house where "that don't work, that's 'lectric" is
heard ( mr. moulterd, referring to the fire alarm).

I am not sure if we see one fully in view--I'd have to look at the ep. But keep in mind that "fourth wall". The one we're looking through. There could be a microwave against it. :)

It could be behind the stove wall near the larder too.

I never thought about that, Frank. I'll have to watch it now . But like Tiddles and Diana said, there's the "other wall" and 'round the back of the stove. So they could always play it off like that.

Say..... maybe it was MICROFT-wave. You know the thing that quickly dries toupees-- invented by Mr. Rumbold's brother??

Re: the fourth wall comments.... AYBAS or GaF was shot in a real building with real walls,
not a stage, so there are 4 walls, well its very irregularly shaped isn't it. I wonder if there
are enough different angle shots in the kitchen during the whole series to let us see
the whole kitchen. Oh well, my original comment was more of a way of noting the
ambiguity of a microwave on a farm that operates just barely out of the 19th century.

Re: the fourth wall comments.... AYBAS or GaF was shot in a real building with real walls,

Doesn't matter though. "The fourth wall" real or otherwise is rarely ever seen or alluded to. It's technically "invisible". In a sitcom, you hardly ever have a camera pan around a whole room. This is mainly due to how things are filmed--like a play. Desi Arnaz was the person to thank for this technique. So to clarify what I said, there could be a microwave against the "fourth wall" that we're not "allowed" to see. The "fourth wall" rule was broken a few times in the AYBS? series when Humphries would look directly at us and speak. "That was a LIE....A LIE..."

Oh well, my original comment was more of a way of noting the

And it's a fun topic!

I believe this was noted by the way Mavis said the word.. mic-ro-wave.. as if it was very new to her.

Whoa! There would have been a great hearth and that would have provided even more walls and perhaps the hearth wouldn't have been against the wall leaving even more space for imagining.
