Oh, That DOES Suit Madam!

In The Old Order Changes, Mr. Grainger approaches Capt. Peacock after everyone comes in modernized and says 'I haven't understood a single word for seven days'...

Based on this, are we to believe that they've been wearing the same outfits each day to work for seven days?!?!

If so...wow...that's a lot of washing in a week for such low wages.

I know... that line always bugs me! I mean it appears that we're witnessing their first day since the change, and then Grainger implies that seven days have gone by. I'm like, What??

Definitely an oddity there. Who knows. Maybe a week really had gone by, and they just happened to be wearing the same clothes on the last day as they were on the first. Anything's possible I suppose.

In seven days they most likely changed their clothing several times and could have ended up with the same garments .:)

Another boo-boo on part of the writers I beleive. Either that or they are complete pigs and don't wash up.

Thanks for bringing this up! It's always bugged me. If they were working like that for 7 days in those outfits they wouldn't have any need to comment on them. And Mrs. Slocombe also "unveiled" her new look. Just didn't make sense. Yes--a boo-boo for sure.

Maybe it was a "boo-boo" but remember this show was always like a stage play for 30 minutes. I mean normally we see the cast wearing the EXACT same outfits each time we see them, at least for that season. And we of course assume they wash their clothes and change them etc. But this was their new outfits for that week. We are supposed to suspend our disbelief just like we normally do. Mrs Slocombe unveils her new look, then there is a break and we see them all selling. Like Greg pointed out they could have also changed back into those outfits. Also, it's an obvious writer's tactic to show the passage of time to have a character refer to how long it's been.

So let's not be TOO hard on the writers!! :grouphug:

I've always interpreted it as meaning that Mr. Grainger has understood nothing that's bee going on since they had that meeting about the change.

Mrs Slocombe states that she's been trying all week and she still can't get it right, Mr Rumbold says to Mr Grace on the telephone (whose been away again) it's been a very good week and that the other departments had their models of Mr Grace a week ago. So it's not a mistake in script but costume.
