After watching the first seven series and the movie, sometimes I wonder how Rumbold became head of the clothing department?

seems like he just was placed with that role from the black & white pilot episode. on that pilot, every character sort of got "introduced", but he seemed to just appear

Yeah, I often find myself wondering how someone as dim-witted as he sometimes appears to be ever got to be head of a department.

When an argument happens between staff members, I think it would just seem easier not to tell him anything.

It's life ... the higher up you are and the more money you make, the less you do. He has a staff that seems to pretty good on their own (at times) so the ship more or less steers itself. When Mr. Grace needs ideas, Rumbold let's the staff dream them up and then steals them.
He's you're "A" typical head of office.

These characters really do seem to become bosses. I had one a few years back named Shaughn. Whenever somebody went to him about anything Shaughn would say, "I'll get back to you on that." And he absolutely never got back to anybody ever about anything!

Wibbly, I like what you're thinking. He is an excellent spinner and can do wishy washy with the best of them. I especially like it when he puts his foot down and ultimately has to give in.

i love the whole "dont put your finger up her nose" conversation, when they were sorting out the argument.

Can you imagine Rumbold working his way up through the sales ranks? He's so wishy-washy that I'd be surprised if he was able to sell anything. The customer would make any uncertain remark and boom, Rumbold would cave the sale

It's horrible to think of Rumbold sleeping with Young Mr. Grace to get the job. :D

Rumbold was once Mr Grace's man servant . He ratted out the housekeeper and the cook and the gardener so Mr Grace promoted him to management at the Store. If you want a better job just rat out your fellow employees .:D
