Britain issues storm warnings
Updated 6h 42m ago

LONDON (AP) — British authorities issued storm warnings Sunday, urging the public to stay away from coastal areas as forecasters said the country faced its severest weather of the year.
The country's meteorological office predicted gale-force winds, heavy showers, high waves, sleet and snow. It said in a statement the storm's effects will first be felt around 5:00 a.m. (0500 GMT) Monday and may combine with high tides to cause flooding.
Britain's Environment Agency has issued six severe flood warnings and is urging people to stay away from coastal areas, particularly in Wales and the south and west of England.
Government officials convened an emergency meeting Sunday to discuss the threat from the storm.
Airports and ferry companies have warned of possible delays and cancellations, while motoring organizations advised drivers to avoid all but essential journeys.
"The strong winds will combine with spring high tides to significantly elevate the water levels along the coast which is likely to cause some flooding," said David Rooke, head of flood risk management at the Environment Agency.
Last year, low-lying areas across England were hit by severe flooding as rivers overflowed causing millions in damages.
