Choose your favorite episode from Season 1. Like Greg's Votes for AYBS?, this poll will Run From Monday To Monday
Here you go Goldie.....
SERIES 1
*Number in parentheses at end of program description is BBCWA library tape number.
1. Young Mr. Grace has died and the store has closed. On behalf of the Pension Fund Mr. Grace acquired a Tudor Manor house with farm which at the moment is being run as a Country House Hotel. Being the only source of pension money for the retired staff, they all decide to visit for the weekend to investigate its possibilities. (1)
2. The staff decide to take over Millstone Manor and run it for themselves. The home farm, run by Morris Moulterd and his daughter Mavis, provides fresh eggs for breakfast, but Mrs. Slocombe gets a shock whilst collecting them. Mr. Humphries and Mavis "to-and-fro" in the woodshed. (2)
3. Mrs. Slocombe finds herself in court charged with stealing a gypsy cart. Captain Peacock and the others travel to town on the back of Moulterd's pig cart. Once in court the staff come forward as character witnesses. (3)
4. A group of American tourists, the hotel's first guests, are due to arrive at the weekend but there are still very few replies to Mr. Rumbold's advert for staff. The only alternative is for them all to knuckle down and try to make the place presentable. (4)
5. A photograph is organized for the hotel brochure. The staff decide to fill the vacant positions at the Manor themselves. Something ghastly (with a bald head and big ears) walks about the Manor on a dark and stormy night. (5)
6. A group of American tourists arrive for the weekend as part of their European tour. The ex-shop workers do their best, but the Americans are expecting a church service and the traditional Harvest Thanksgiving Dance. (6)

I had to vote for Episode 06.
As many of you know, I just love the dance routines that they do, and the harvest dance was great.

I voted for episode 5 although it was a very difficult decision. The posing for the photo and the goofy spookiness convinced me in the end.

Wow, this is tough! This is more difficult than the polls in AYBS in that, to me, the episodes have a continuing theme and plot and many really do not have a "start" or "stop" to them. Mrs Slocombe's trial is just plain funny from start to finish (Rumbold in leather and "Hang the bird in the cellar!" in particular for me). I also love the teasling scene. Our family has been known to do our own teasling in the tub at the hotel when we run out of clothes on vacation. Other favorites from season one include Maurice's flood of emotion for the staff photo as well as the harvest dance. I guess what it comes down to is I do not have one favorite episode that stands out above the others. Sorry.

Very astute observations, Maurice!!!
There is also an odd time sequence discrepancy implied in some of the
episodes.....In the first 4 episodes, you get the feeling that the time
sequence is about 1 day per episode. What with Mr. Humphries and Mavis
sleeping together (that's kind of my gauge).
Then later there is the distinct feeling that the staff have been there
for many days if not months....especially toward the end of
year two (in the Mongolian Dung episode, Rumbold says they have plenty of time before the Mongolians arrive....time to put an ad in the paper and
rehearse etc. etc. yet later in the same episode, here are the Mongolians)
Also, there are several groups that come to the Manor....American,
Monks, Mongolians, and more americans....since they are only
doing weekend hotelling (is that a word?), this must signify at least
a 4 week period. Yet, the staff are acting like they've only been on site
for a few days.....
Any of this make any sense?????
And I apologize for going off topic, maybe this should be in another thread.

Seeing Mrs. Slocombe topple in "Mrs. Slocombe's Trial" is hysterical. Also, Rumbold's all-leather biking outfit and Peacock's motorcycle fantasy are rich!

This thread can remain in the forum. I for one was wondering what happened to Season One voting and results...seeing I was away for so long recently. This forum is small enough that we'll close these threads as the polls close, but the threads will remain here on the AYBS? Again board for our perusals and general convenience. ~~Tids
