Does the poor audio quality of the pilot bother anyone here? I was watching it on APT last night and the hiss on the soundtrack was loud enough to be heard over my central heat's fan. (We in the gramophone dept. are all audiophiles, after all.)

YES! ME! it has been mentioned before on different threads about the pilot.
on my disc it sounds like a high pitched squeal in places. I don't remember this
problem on the VHS version though

The real problem for me is when watching the first disc and "The Pilot" eppy is over then "Dear Sexy Knickers" comes on, there is a volume difference that drives me.

The DVD seems to be less irritating, audio-wise, especially if you turn the sound down a bit.

No too loud. Like going from a transistor radio to a Hi-Fi stero.

I'm sorry, wasn't paying attention, what was that about a radio belonging to a
tramp's sister?

Ever the optimist, I just wanted to point out at least we get to even see and hear the pilot episode, considering all that was remaining was a black & white copy, even though it was filmed in color. At least we aren't all sitting here speculating on "I wonder what the Pilot episode was like! I've seen a couple of stills!" Enjoy what we have! :hat:

I've only watched the pilot twice, maybe three times tops. So it never had time to bother me. :D

When I first watched the Pilot on DVD when I bought it, I hoped that all the other episodes wouldn't sound like that. So I was relieved when I watched the rest of series 1 and you could still hear the hiss, but it wasn't as loud. Why do they have the hiss? Is it because of it being in the archive?

I can't hear a hiss at all on my Series 1 DVD, on the Pilot or any other episode for that matter.

Money was about, well, Money and greed. Are you being served is about a department store with cash registers... Roger Waters would have sued them by now if it was copyright... maybe he's a fan!..... actually, i read that Nick Mason came up with idea of the cash register in the song

I don't think the audio quality in the pilot episode is that much different than the rest of the episodes. It doesn't sound as good, but it doesn't really bother me. it just sounds like it was recorded with a cheap tape recorder. Of course, u all probabally got newer, hi-fi TVs. My TV is over 30 years old, so i don't really notice the picture and sound quality imperfections.
the audio and picture quality on the pilot does make it look much older than it actually is though... if i didn't know when it came out, I would have sworn it was from the early-mid '60s.
Also, anyone notice the YouTube comments on that episode? people are arguing that it was filmed in 1969, but not aired until 1972. I would have believed that because they all do look younger than the rest of the first season, but if you look at the sales chart in Mr. Rumbold's office, it's dated 1972.

Lucas looks especially younger and so does Humphries, Brahams and Slocombe. The others look the same.
the dvd says it was broadcast on September 8, but not when it was actually recorded. i'm guess sometime in early 1971. Maybe the sales chart says 72 cause they knew it would broadcast then.
On a side night, with Open All Hours, the pilot WAS filmed in 1973, but series 1 wasnt recorded until 1976

When it was actually recorded is a bit of a mystery. The only info I can get is that **"The pilot was given it's chance under woeful circumstances: the tragedy of the Munich Olympics, in which eleven Israelis were killed in Septemeber of 1972, meant that the BBC - whose schedules had been geared around the world event, found themselves with blank screens to fill as coverage of the Games was cancelled. With hours of tranmission time to occupy, the "Are You Being Served?" pilot was plucked from the shelf and aired to a captive audience of millions."**

I don't notice much difference either on a newer TV. I would think they would have fixed the audio "problems" before releasing on DVD, since they can do so much with quality and sound nowadays. Could be a bad DVD as well since I had that happen once with another show. One DVD was bad (no audio) and when I got a replacement there was sound!
